Judge lifts order against Indiana abortion procedure ban

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) A federal judge has allowed an Indiana law largely banning a second-trimester abortion procedure to take effect following the U.S. Supreme Courts decision to overturn Roe v. Wade.
Judge Sarah Evans Barkers order signed Thursday lifted the injunction she issued in 2019 blocking the law against the dilation and evacuation abortions.
The law took effect immediately, according to the state attorney generals office, and is the first tightening of Indianas anti-abortion laws since the Supreme Court decision. Indiana could have more sweeping abortion restrictions by next month as the Republican-dominated Legislature is scheduled to begin a special legislative session on July 25.
Barker granted a request from the Indiana attorney generals office to lift her order, writing that the Supreme Courts decision in June overturning the 1973 landmark ruling that made abortion legal nationwide removed the linchpin holdings for her analysis.

(1,671 posts)At 7 weeks into my 1st pregnancy, I went to the ER when I became ill (vomited) and experienced severe cramping. It was there I was diagnosed with a threatened miscarriage and advised to follow-up that day with my OB who I wasn't scheduled to see for the 1st time until the following week. The OB saw me that day and, since the cramping had subsided and I had no bleeding, he said there was nothing wrong with me.
5 weeks later, I started bleeding and cramping and went to the ER again. My *new* OB ordered a sonogram and informed me the gestational sac was only 7 weeks in size (i.e., my pregnancy had ended at 7 weeks). I was hospitalized and given pitocin which caused me to go into full on labor complete with excruciating pain requiring a muscle relaxant injection at one point. After hours of that, my uterus still hadn't expelled all the contents necessitating the D&C which I underwent under general anesthesia in the OR.
I went on to have 3 full term labors & deliveries and it was still the worst pregnancy experience out of all of them.
I couldn't imagine being in that situation today in a red state with an abortion ban since I might have been refused any treatment until I was at a point my life in jeopardy.
