I also like how the one person said that nothing is bad. I strongly suspect they go to church, and I wonder if they'd boldly proclaim that in next Sunday's service?

a couple of hours of Gone With the Wind, between commercials. They are completely ignorant of the fact that plantation owners were a small sliver of southern society. They were the billionaires of their day. And not even all of the plantation owners were wealthy. A lot of them were heavily in debt much of the time. But you're right, most southern whites at that time lived very rudimentary lives. But these fools think they would have had 1000 slaves. That's the kind of people in Trumpland.

Is the $64,000,000.00 question. I don't feel bad being white either. As a child or an adult. I do however acknowledge the atrocities committed by my white ancestors. It's like they think if they admit it was horrific and nine kinds of wrong, then that makes THEM personally responsible. No, WE are responsible for not continuing the hatred and vile behavior.

Seeing someone in slavery ought to make a person's skin crawl. How could anybody not find it reprehensible? And even if for no other reason than asking yourself how would I feel if I were a slave, it should never be tolerated or covered up for. These people are just plain yucky. Sometimes I wonder if this country is worth saving, but I remind myself that these people are a minority.

but, let us not forget, that nearly EVERONE's ancestors in the U.S. today, were in the majority when they originally arrived in North America and proceeded to obliterate all the original Native Americans inhabitants of this land!

Just like the black slaves, we need to also recognize that the wiping out of the Native North American Indians was a massive genocide that was far greater than I think has ever been done by any other nation to it's inhabitants.........

They came here to a new land and proceeded to run off or kill the people who were already here. They moved into an area, negotiated for peace, and then broke every promise they’d made. And they did it over and over again. The people they didn’t kill with guns or disease, they herded onto reservations. There’s nothing but ugliness in all of that. It’s a wonder that all the Indians today aren’t terrorists. If they don’t have a reason, no one does.

The appeal of Conservatism is entirely emotional. Conservatism was born of Royalism. It is a very similar philosophy to the ideas that were around during the time of absolute monarchy and aristocracy. They merely changed the characteristics of the "chosen" or "ordained" people from blood nobility to those who accumulated vast wealth. So the aristocracy remained and wealthy merchants became the other side of the coin.

In order to continue to justify the wealth and power in limited hands, you have to have a strong method of getting people who will never be rich and powerful to support you. Hence the idea of racial and moral superiority. Convince the poor that they are at least better than Black and Brown people, and they will defend your ability to flaunt your wealth in their own faces.

I'm watching this country fall apart. Politically and socially. I am fed the fuck up, son. Fed the fuck up.

How is this even possible? And we're a "Christian nation"? Really? thank god the Old Testament is there to justify the excrement in a human being fucking bag that they happen to be. Un-fucking-believable. But I'm an optimist and generally a believer in the good of my fellow man, this is sincerely, truthfully, beyond comprehension to me. I can't wrap my mind around it.

My first reaction, that I was basically screaming at poor Mrs. Glam, was.....okay. Cool. When you get to work tomorrow, show up with another set of clothes and that's all you get. You don't get to go home. You will now be relegated to a shack. You can work 16 hours a day with no pay. If someone wants to rape you? Ya know, that's cool. If you mouth off or try to escape? Severe beatings, loss of limb, perhaps death. Oh and you can be shipped across the continent at a moments notice never to see you're family again. Now tell me that a teacher saying slavery is bad isn't cool with you.

And I calmed down, smoked a bowl....and it hit me. Like a goddamn meteor. These fucking @#$%^&*)(_*^$@!#^U*^$@#@$^^%$#@ (Feel free to fill that in, but it's pretty goddamn profane. Just sayin) .... It took me a minute, and I got distracted by the horrors we know that existed. Hence, the paragraph above. But my initial reaction missed the deeper point. It's not okay for these privileged white assholes to hear a teacher is saying it's wrong FOR A HUMAN BEING TO BE OWNED AS PROPERTY! WTAF dude?

They're three fucking WOMEN! Now, officially, second class citizens. WTAF man? WTAF?

They see themselves (as White Protestants without too many vowels in their last names) as a protected class, in what they hope is a fascist regime in the not too distant future.

But if they knew the first thing about dictatorships, they'd know that they seldom take long to become a proverbial snake eating its own tail.

And they'd definitely be the tail.

But to be honest, just teaching the facts about slavery will undoubtedly leave the students with the impression that slavery was bad, even if the teacher never offers a direct opinion on the subject.

The facts of slavery are that people of color were subjugated, tortured, raped, murdered, bred, bought, and sold—those facts speak to the horrors of slavery. No opinions are even necessary to teach that slavery was bad.

looked a lot different, I have been astonished to realize I was born white.

I don't claim any kind of special connection or understanding of Black people. But the randomness of where I was born, what race I was born to, heck even my ethnicity (Irish as in all four grandparents came from Ireland) has been at the front of my mind since I was about three years old.

And no, I'm not exaggerating. I can remember stuff that happened before I turned two, and have lots of coherent and cohesive memories from age three. There were very few Black people where I was, and I certainly had zero understanding of race and the nuances thereof, but I kept on being surprised that I had not been born Black.

And yeah, to anyone who says that slavery wasn't so bad, I say sell them into slavery.
