Interesting episode of McNeil Lehrer I came across from '87.
A featured segment discusses the SCOTUS 6-3 decision in "California Federal Savings and Loan Association v. Guerra," which upheld pregnancy leave laws mandating that employers protect job positions for women who take UNPAID leave to care for their newborns.
Just before the 22:00 mark, there's a debate discussion between then-Rep. Pat Schroeder (D, Colo) and Virginia Lamp then of the US Chamber of Commerce.
What's fascinating about this exchange is a textbook example of pro-life conservatives not giving a damn about the babies post-partum; here you have women who have to pay the bills but they choose to KEEP their baby and just need a bit of protection that they can get back in the game (no handouts, it's unpaid leave).
