(12,321 posts)Gov Abbott is enjoying 80 degrees and top of line air condition in Orange County, California.
Take care Texas.
DFW
(54,436 posts)Even by Texas standards, still considered to be a modest population center.
At least while Abbott is enjoying balmy temperatures in California, Texas is enjoying time without Abbott.
I hope the people at our HQ in Dallas manage to stay cool. Somewhere near 500 people work there.

(7,655 posts)Is it too much to ask for the energy providers in the energy capital of America to increase our grid capacity? Let's go back to regulated utilities where profit is not the only consideration - the deregulation certainly has not reduced our energy bills.

(10,202 posts)What usually kills older people in over heating situations is lack of water.....they don't drink enough water. When it is extremely hot, you sometimes don't even feel thirsty.
And don't forget salts and potassium. If you don't have a heart or kidney problem, salts and potassium can be life savers in the heat and keep your electrolytes balanced.

(10,202 posts)It causes severe overheating of the planet then cuts supply of energy needed to keep cool. Then overcharges for that energy that can be gotten for pennies from that thing that is overheating the planet.
Capitalism is sooo broken.

(2,120 posts)We're still on pre-heat.
Any Texans remember the summer of 2011?
And it's going to take 2-5 gigawatts of reliable generating capacity (a la nuc plants) to "fix the grid"in the short term. That's not going to happen in a couple of years. We're probably going to hit 80 gigawatts of peak demand today. With the Texas population and housing boom growing as it is we're going to need a few more nuc plants. (And if you say "wind and solar", look at the charts.)

Wind is almost non-existent at the time of peak demand.
Farmer-Rick
(10,202 posts)Well, at least not in our lifetimes.
I use solar power throughout the farm. And I rarely have a problem I can't fix. If I had enough money, I would convert my house to solar power.
It maybe the only solution for Texas, private housing solar setups. Since their power grid is so broken and expensive.
dumbcat
(2,120 posts)But as a retired electrical engineer and former solar (Photovoltaic) consultant, I'll tell you that it is not a solution to grid problems. There are way too many complex issues, both technical and financial.
On a farm or homestead or private residence it's great. I've had solar panels on my roof since 1994. But a grid servicing urban areas is a whole 'nother issue.
FBaggins
(26,757 posts)When the excess demand is caused directly by air conditioning demands on a hot and sunny day... solar is an excellent fit for "grid problems".
Now... the winter outages that TX recently dealt with? Solar is close to useless in that scenario.

(19,258 posts)Regular power failures, or constantly high energy costs, will make industry look elsewhere to build new factories in the coming years.
Because remember kids, in 20 years these will be considered cool summers in retrospect. It will be an entirely different world at 2C of warming.
FBaggins
(26,757 posts)I can't find that news anywhere.
ERCOT real-time tracking shows capacity at about 20% above current demand.
https://www.ercot.com/content/cdr/html/real_time_system_conditions.html
On edit - poweroutage.us and Oncor's power outage map shows no such thing. There are about 50 homes without power in and around the DFW metroplex (in 2s and 3s). That's not "rolling blackouts" (let alone "ROLLING BLACKOUTS" . That a Monday.
The peak danger was supposed to come in the mid-afternoon. The OP should be deleted.
FBaggins
(26,757 posts)Actual demand is almost 3GW below the projection from yesterday and project to be 2GW lower through the peak period.
No rolling blackouts today unless multiple plants go down unexpectedly.

(13,570 posts)Not that it isn't a possibility in the future. The stagnant dome of high pressure doesn't look like it's going to be leaving anytime soon. This is causing all kinds of bad weather all over the country. The jet stream is broken. Caused by global warming.
The supply and demand graph is starting to become further apart as of this writiing.
