I would, of course, get them counseling help, but I'd spend the summer with a few other kids, if possible that experienced similar AND with animals. Those animal refuge farms that encourage troubled kids to spend time with any number of species... I'm a firm believer in the healing power of animals (and of course with other humans who share your experience). Specifically, though, the empathy required to rehab animals that have experienced cruelty and trauma might well be just what some of those poor kids need to move beyond their own horrific experiences. We've seen it help soldiers with PTSD, rehab previously violent inmates, and bring autistic kids out of their isolation. I wish I ran one so that I could help in this.

I just feel so bad for these kids.
