(601 posts)The White Rose was a non-violent, intellectual resistance group in Nazi Germany which was led by five students and one professor at the University of Munich, including Hans Scholl, Alexander Schmorell, Willi Graf, Christoph Probst, and Sophie Scholl. The group conducted an anonymous leaflet and graffiti campaign that called for active opposition to the Nazi regime. Their activities started in Munich on 27 June 1942, and ended with the arrest of the core group by the Gestapo on 18 February 1943. They, as well as other members and supporters of the group who carried on distributing the pamphlets, faced show trials by the Nazi People's Court, and many of them were sentenced to death or imprisonment. Hans and Sophie Scholl, as well as Christoph Probst were executed by guillotine four days after their arrest, on 22 February 1943. During the trial, Sophie interrupted the judge multiple times. No defendants were given any opportunity to speak.

(5,801 posts)Checking in from SW AZ (yuma). Even those neighbors with whom under normal circumstances I would have had something to talk with over common interests, e.g. horses or gardening, turned out to be wacked out trumpers and/or LDS (the pod people). There's no global warming, the Dems are crazy liberals, etc.--I've heard it all. The crazy surfaced soon enough that I don't even bother any more. Am moving this fall--came here for a particular reason which no longer is in effect so am getting out.
birdographer
(1,331 posts)Had we known then what we know now, we would NEVER have moved here. No matter where you go in town, there are idiots talking among themselves about how Biden did this, Biden did that--all things that are completely false and easily verified. Of course we learned long ago not to engage with them. Oh, to live around intelligent humans! (Not moving though...at our advanced age, it's too much bother. We just don't socialize.)
not fooled
(5,801 posts)although the ever-increasing heat in this area makes the decision simpler. When I came here I knew it would be conservative but that was mid-2010s, before the crazy became so dangerous and pervasive.
My mistake after I no longer had reason to be here was to stay for the time being and put money into the house and yard. Right after doing so I really wised up to how bad it is. And, not just the residents--guess what, this isn't a nice place to live once you scratch the surface: local government is corrupt, developers run the county = a drab, dingy patchwork of new houses thrown up ASAP, I've heard several hair-raising stories of malfeasance involving LEO and county officials up to and including murder that go unpunished because of who's involved, etc.
My point is that it sure looks as though having an ignorant, misinformed populace susceptible to GQPee influence leads to a poor quality of life in other aspects as well.
Lesson learned as far as picking where to live.

(10,185 posts)Don't get me wrong they need to be held accountable for their actions.
But Nazis, GOPers, White supremacists, Hate Groups Klan members target vulnerable people to convert to their craziness much like religion does. Out of 350 million Americans these weak minded, susceptible and easily manipulated were targeted to convert to the Trump religion. Religions and hate groups probably have a list of traits to look for to convert. I doubt Nazis look for strong, smart women to convert.
What has changed is that the pressure tactics and manipulation techniques have gotten better and more efficient at targeting the right people. Facebook and other social media has been very helpful in this.
Just look at all the Catfishing scams going on. So many people giving up their money for love of people they never met and that don't exist. The internet opened up access to all these vulnerable people that scammers couldn't reach before.
Maybe we need to look at better regulating these scammers.

(6,833 posts)The first thing the "information age" actually produced was misinformation. It has benefitted the "conservative" movement that internet liars are not better regulated. It's a simple case of 1st amendment rights prostituted to facilitate theft.

(15,540 posts)My story:
My son-in-law is a Republican. If you were to look at him you'd not believe he voted for Trump. He has two degrees and a professional job. To be fair, I certainly don't know for sure that he did, but I'm about 99% sure he did. He used to watch The Apprentice religiously and thought the guy was just a brilliant businessman. He's only in his early 40's so he had no real history of what tfg was like in the early days and how some of us knew what his schtick was years ago, including me.
Now that the info is out there for all to see, I have a feeling that he is embarrassed for the people who know him like myself for instance and he is now desperately trying to convince people of how smart he is. He likes to try to engage me in an argument about various things, but I won't bite which makes him even madder because a.) he has never known a smart, strong woman in his life and b.) I won't engage with any arguments with him.
I'll bet he would vote for him again.

(239 posts)--is that Trump got over 70 million votes in the 2020 election! How anyone can look at that narcissistic, corrupt moron and think he is a good leader is beyond my comprehension. But yet millions love him. The hardcore Trump supporters are truly dangerous. I honestly believe they would kill for him. All Trump has to do is pick an enemy and say "Go get them" and they will go after them without mercy. I have yet to meet a hardcore Trump supporter who was smarter than a gnat. They are gullible, prone to violence and very dumb. I fear that they are going to take over this country. The 2022 and 2024 elections are crucial in determining which direction our country will take. We cannot let the MAGA morons win! If we do our democracy is dead. They will construct an authoritarian theocracy and turn America into a hellscape.
ShazzieB
(16,426 posts)As shocking as it was when he got elected in 2016, in retrospect I actually find that less shocking than the fact that tens of millions of people wanted to REelect him after that four year 🤡 show we all had ringside seats for.
I had a hard enough time understanding why so many people wanted to vote for him once, but TWICE? After watching what a crappy job he did with their own eyes?
I realize now that I greatly, hugely, gigantically underestimated the hold that Fux Noise and its cohorts has on a much too large segment of the population of this country. UGH.

(16,426 posts)That's why he's so proud of it. You can see he's just BURSTING with pride and totally stoked to show off his ink to the camera (not to mention his fellow Trumpers). He's so proud to have the orange psychopath's name indelibly etched on his skin that he can hardly stand it. He wouldn't be that proud of having simply written something on himself.
I really do hope he lives to regret it bigly, especially when he finds out how much it will cost to have it removed.

(6,254 posts)the wealthy. I was down in Cape May, NJ last week and the Trump flag waived on many very expensive boats. Not as many as previous years but still it amazes me. My BIL who is extremely wealthy is a fully stuck down the rabbit hole. He gets all his news from FB memes and absurd stories written by propagandists. He sat and watched 2000 Mules with an intensity I have never seen from him before. When I try to explain how its impossible to create fake ballots as NJ has over 500 towns and all the ballots are different he just shrugs off the facts. He knows nothing about the insurrection and everything is either fake news or that I am drinking the Kool Aid. All he understands is Hunter Biden, Hillary the killer, stolen ballots and he despises Biden. I said to him, think what you may of his politics but its almost impossible to hate Biden. Like Biden, my BIL is a Catholic who never misses weekly mass. My BIL is as convinced as I am that we are very close to losing our democracy but the reasons he cites are much different than my reasons. He refuses to acknowledge the affect the pandemic and Russian invasion has had on prices. Its all Democrats fault. His decent into the Q world is largely due to boredom. He is 74 years old, has tons of money, 3 multi-million dollar houses and garages full of Porches and Ferraris but he is basically bored and has his head in his iPad all day forwarding disinformation to his buddies who are in the same crazy club. We do agree that limiting money in politics and term limits must be enacted. Other than that, I am just a dumb-o-crat as he says and I call him Benedict Ronald or Ronnie the Red. I asked him beyond overturning Roe do you know what else SCOTUS did that week. He had no clue. Worst yet, he lives most of the year in NJ where he has a home on the water at the beach and a horse farm but he registers and votes in Fla where he has a horse farm in Boca. He was telling me that 8 billionaires live in his community and long time residents sent a letter to the neighbors saying dont sell their homes as they want to keep the character of the horse farm community.I said yea, the billionaires want to get rid of you and my sister the multi-millionaire poor white trash of the neighborhood. Although he is worth probably about 20 million he is a peon in Boca. Even he laughs at that.

(111,277 posts)and I tried to tell the SDS bunch I knew what the rest of the country was really like. That did little for my popularity, never mind I'd lived all over the country and few of them had been outside of NY/New England except for that senior trip abroad that told them nothing about the midwest, the deep south, or anywhere else. They'd grown up in "love Me, I'm a Liberal" land and that was their world.
The people who think in slogans and bumper stickers were always out there. Now they're in plain sight and nobody can deny that they exist. The problem is what to do about them.
