https://www.aljazeera.com/amp/economy/2022/7/11/texas-wind-power-is-failing-amid-a-scorching-us-heat-waveWind power a key source of electricity in Texas is being sidelined just when the Lone Star State needs it most, with turbines generating less than a 10th of what theyre capable of.
A scorching heat wave is pushing the Texas grid to the brink. Power demand is surging as people crank up air conditioners. But meanwhile, wind speeds have fallen to extremely low levels, and that means the states fleet of turbines is at just 8% of their potential output.
Texas may be Americas oil and gas hub, but its also long been the countrys biggest wind-power state. The renewable energy source has become highly politicized: Some critics blamed frozen wind turbines for the Texas grids failure during a deadly winter storm last year, even though disruptions at plants powered by natural gas were the bigger culprit.
The current lows for Texas turbines also point to a broader contradiction facing the world as it transitions to cleaner energy sources. While countries across the globe are generating more electricity from intermittent wind and solar sources, large-scale, battery storage is still in its ascendancy. That leaves major grids more fragile and vulnerable to shock.

OP
Residential solar panels will cut in to profits for electric utilities - can't have that...

Wind farms in west TX are vast. TX usually has a brown out or 2 during summer.

(17,863 posts)1. And how long do they plan to store that power
Heat waves can last weeks. I don't think we can get past the fact that fission reactors are a necessary part of the energy mix. Also every rooftop from the midwest down should have solar collectors. 8% of maximum capacity for wind turbines is unfathomable.

Here in Houston area yesterday, we were asked to kick AC up one degree, close curtains against bright sun, and don't use major appliances between 2pm-5pm. Easy and all fairly typical for hot summer. Sounds more like someone wants to blame wind energy.
