The betrayal of a family in one's keep was a major shock in the Game of Thrones narrative. When one invited guests into their house and keep, they were honor bound to defend them. The Freys betrayal of the Starks in that massacre was a truly ugly thing and the violence was the headline, but the trashing of norms and mores was the larger shock and plunged the realm in the story into utter chaos for the remainder of the story.
