Why would you continue to proceed down a path that was certainly illegal, and with miniscule chance of success? Why not just stay silent?

I think Putin has kompromat.

So their choices were:

1) Support a coup, and it succeeds. Their reputations/power/wealth remain intact
2) Support a coup, and it fails. They may go to jail, or be persona non-grata in the political realm for a while.
3) Don't support a coup, and Russia comes forward with the stuff, and be really dismissed from all society, and face possible legal ramifications

There is only 1 option where they face no consequenses.

I think this kompromat thing is possible because Lindsey turned so incredibly fast from a Trump basher in 2016 to a Trump supporter shortly thereafter.
