I mean, as compared to the flu or strep throat or one of the hepatitases? It has a very low mortality rate, even in west Africa. Does it cause disfigurement as smallpox did?

It's in the same family as smallpox, and the fear is that it will evolve down that same path if allowed to spread unobstructed. More contagious, more lethal.
No reason to be scared today. It's a long-term threat.

People need to know what it is and take precautions accordingly.
