Poll Shows Tight Race for Control of Congress as Class Divide Widens

Nonwhite and working-class Democrats worry more about the economy, while white college graduates focus more on issues like abortion rights and guns.

The fight for control of Congress may come down to the big contrast in voters who cite the economy as their top issue and those who cite abortion rights and guns as their foremost concern. Credit...Stefani Reynolds for The New York Times

With President Biden’s approval rating mired in the 30s and with nearly 80 percent of voters saying the country is heading in the wrong direction, all the ingredients seem to be in place for a Republican sweep in the November midterm elections.

But Democrats and Republicans begin the campaign in a surprisingly close race for control of Congress, according to the first New York Times/Siena College survey of the cycle.

It’s what’s we need to get people out to vote. Sometimes you have to scare the hell out of them. If what the SC is currently doing doesn’t convince people why they have to vote, nothing else will.

I know that we're not always going to agree on policy, that there are different wings of our party. But we're all on the same team. We need to mobilize and act like we're the ones who are going to carry us across the finish line.

Let's not point fingers, let's not play the blame game or how we got here or if we're not happy with every member of our party. If we're going to have the gloves off, figuratively speaking, let's save them for the other side of the aisle, not for us.

I think we’ll hold the Senate and even pick up a couple of seats, but holding the House will be much more difficult.
