As a scholar who's examined just about every attitudinal correlate of staunch abortion opposition, I feel safe saying "anti-abortion" is the most accurate descriptor, not "pro-life." Abortion abolitionists consistently hold more pro-violence, pro-authoritarian views. Receipts ⬇️

Has anyone at the New York Times publicly explained why they use "pro-life" instead of "anti-abortion," which is the AP Style preference?

Just a few comparisons. But note those who'd ban abortion are more into good-guys-with-guns, death penalty, any-means-necessary policing, torture, & are just more pro-violence period. Doesn't mean folks against abortion are all authoritarians. But they don't lean more "pro-life."

The christofascists find it necessary to be God. When humans come up with technology and policies that avert the "natural consequences of sin", they think they are God and have to make sure punishment is insured.

Remember that there are two audiences that anti-abortion abolitionists are targeting - the "sinful" pro-choice advocates and, perhaps more importantly, their own in-group. Children born to this latter group can be trained to be "faithful soldiers of the Lord", and anyone in their in group who does have an abortion is reducing the potential number of said soldiers. In many respects this group tends to view "ethnic cleansing" as a just action, and envision themselves at war with the godless heathens.

This also affects their approach to parenting: when you are raising soldiers, you cannot be soft with them - you train them for violence by starting violence early. This same mentality accounts for physical and sexual abuse, for the belief that sparing the rod will spoil the child, and even towards an attitude that encourages terrorism so long as it is done to further fasco-Christian ideals. Weakness is not acceptable. reliance on others is unacceptable unless they are part of the same in-group, and anyone who isn't part of that in-group are not really human in their eyes.
