Sen. Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa) is beating Democrat challenger Mike Franken by 8 percent among likely Iowa voters, new polling shows, in what could be his closest race since first winning his Senate seat more than 40 years ago.
The seven-term senator leads with 47 percent over Frankens 39 percent, according to a Des Moines Register-Mediacom Iowa poll.
The poll marks the first time Grassley has polled below 50 percent against his challenger since he was elected to the Senate in 1980, the Des Moines Register reports.
Grassley, the oldest Republican senator at 88, quelled speculation about his potential retirement when he announced his run for an eighth term in September.

Got it: 'a first look at what could be Grassleys most competitive election since 1980.
Grassley leads 47% to 39% against Franken, a retired U.S. Navy admiral, in the latest poll, conducted July 10-13 by Selzer & Co. Another 7% of likely voters say they would vote for someone else, 2% say they would not vote and 5% say they are not sure.' >>>

(19,204 posts)I've pretty much given up on Iowa ever joining the 21st century, along with other dead-red states. They'll joyfully sponge off of the blue state's tax burden and help run the country by minority rule.
