Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI'd like to see Kamala Harris being groomed by Joe Biden to be the next president.
It's just an idea I came up with from watching submarine movies and it may be totally naive, but it seems to me that if our vice president took on a role similar to a naval executive officer, subordinate to Joe Biden ( "the captain" ) but in command of the ship in the eyes of the crew, then she'd be more likely to be elected president, whether in 2024 or 2028.
Dumb idea?
Edit: To groom means to "prepare or train (someone) for a particular purpose or activity."

(94,796 posts)Question 2: what do you imagine executive officer would mean in a White House with a Chief of Staff and other administrative officers?
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)when he chose Kamala Harris to be the VP. Anyone running for president knows the VP has to be qualified to be president, otherwise he's just playing politics.

brooklynite
(94,796 posts)...the OP is suggesting Harris should be Biden's choice as the next Democratic nominee.
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)then that conversation can come in2028. If he talked about it in any other context the optics would be that he is not sure if he is running for a second term. Did we have these conversations halfway into Bill Clinton or Obama's first term?

brooklynite
(94,796 posts)...the Chief of Staff is.
Aside from the Constitutional requirement to serve as President of the Senate, the VP is almost always given responsibility for a specific POLICY issue.

(66,481 posts)If Kamala Harris does anything over and above her Constitutional duties as VP, people may start to say (more than they already are, anyway) that President Biden isn't up to the job, and is having people cover for him.
Mr.Bill
(24,334 posts)But I also think the press is acting as if she doesn't exist.

(17,087 posts)There's really little point to the position, other than to break ties in the Senate, and succeed to the Presidency, should need arise. Garnering support to run for a future term is all on her.

(94,796 posts)She (and other Democratic candidates) will have to prove their electability and policy goals.

(1,327 posts)If Biden does not run in 2024 and she is ultimately the nominee, then of course I am voting for her, but she was not my first or second choice in 2020 and I would like to see what everyone from the 2024 field of candidates has to offer if/when the time comes.

(17,663 posts)Being Vice President, even an outstanding Vice President, does not mean that you could be a great President. I think that there are some people in our party that have the ability to be a great President. Of course the first step of becoming a great president it the ability to be elected.
Small stones, please, I am old and tender.

(15,686 posts)In my dreams, Warren, or perhaps Sanders, but sadly, I think their time has passed, and for better or worse, the Democratic voters will likely lean towards a younger candidate.
I dont have any firm names for 2024 yet, but there are many I find interesting, including:
Gov. Whitmer
Gov. Roy Cooper of NC
Sen. Gillibrand
Gov. Inslee
I think Butteigeig would make an excellent candidate, as would Klobuchar, but they are too moderate for my tastes.(although they are on the record being open to court expansion, and modifying the filibuster, to requirements for my support in the primary)
Beyond 2024, I am excited about a number of possible candidates who will have a bit more experience by then:
Soon-to-be-Sen. Fetterman,
Sen. Warnock.
And, as VP for either of them
AOC
MerryBlooms
(11,773 posts)Is Fetterman. I love all the folks you listed, but don't believe any of them are more electable than Harris. The down side is, I don't believe Fetterman would run if he wins his current raceI don't see a deep Dem bench. Biden is definitely our best choice, and All messaging needs to support him! If something changes that course down the road, we're in trouble.

(36,161 posts)but I'd also like to see the governor of the 6th largest GDP on the planet be the next U.S. president.
We're lucky to have them both. Whoever we run, however, we'd still need to GOTFV for a majority of both houses, so they don't have to struggle with a christo-fascist opposition like Obama and Biden had to.
Newsom comes up with manufacturing solutions, trades internationally, can create budget surpluses by taxing the rich.
Even though Harris was AG of that same huge state/economy, Newsom seems, at least publicly, to have more prosecutorial heft, taking issues to the self-proclaimed enemy like a political warrior.

If you look constipated all the time, politics might not be for you?
If you call your wife, mother and seek her approval constantly, politics might not be for you?
If members of your own party are filmed chanting HANG (insert your name here), it might not be a good idea to step into that car?
So in summary, a V.P. has things to consider!?! Or is it considerate of things?
