Or maybe everyone smelled like stale cigarette smoke because everyone smoked back then, so no one noticed.

My mom used to smoke in the house, so I would get up extra early and wash my school clothes in the hopes that smell would wash away. Spoiler: it didn't. I'd still smell like I smoked a carton.
