My total guess....
Ron Desantis
With running mate...
Nicky Haley
On edit:. And they will moderate tons, but will say that FG was the best president...but too many people tried to stop him and we are ushering in a new Republican era! Little bit of trump and a whole lot of our new thinking for the future

(12,384 posts)Of course he is going to run. If he doesnt get the gop nomination he will run as a independent.

(1,604 posts)If TFG does not win the GOP nomination, he will run as a third-party candidate. He'll lose, but he'll sink the GOP in the process. My expectation for the 2024 GOP primary race:
TFG
DeSantis
Cruz
Haley
Romney
Abbot
MTG

(42,770 posts)people like you... When they, in actuality, hate you?

(32,075 posts)If you run in the R or D primary and don't win you are not allowed to run for the office as a third party later on in that cycle. So Trump really could not run third party. The electoral votes in the limited states he could be on the ballot just would not be there.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)would back out, if that happens?

(32,075 posts)He would create a national organization (with dues of course) to pressure the new administration and congress and the states.

I dont think Haley will.
MTG wont, though she honestly thinks she deserves it nobody with deep enough pockets is stupid enough to give her too much money. Just enough to tread water. Nothing more.

(10,580 posts)But I suspect the Dem will likely run against Newsom or Abrams. (I dont think Biden will run again- Im hoping Im wrong).

(7,447 posts)Trump or DeSantis.
I don't see anyone else beating those two.
DeSantis would be harder to beat, Trump easier.
But crazies will be more fired up to get Trump in which might increase chances of shenanigans compared to DeSantis.
I fear DeSantis way more than Trump...he's competent evil.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)Agree .. no one else could beat them

(7,447 posts)I'd rather have Trump win their primary, so the best thing we can do is go all out to beat DeSantis for Governor.
A loss will take the shine off him.

(10,916 posts)The front runner 2 years out is hardly ever the nominee.
Laura PourMeADrink
(42,770 posts)someone who can accommodate trumpers. If you don't, you lose 1/3 of your base right? No one can win without some kind of trump suck up can they?

(10,916 posts)Still somewhat Trump-friendly, but mainstream enough to thread the needle.
Plus being a woman offsets some of the post-Roe backlash.
I'm also hoping it is NOT Haley.

(33,198 posts)The GrOPpers have learned they want a front man and DeSantis is used to being the top man. He also has too much baggage to pick up many undecided voters. What few are left.
The bench is so shallow I cant even say who it would be. They will start running potential candidates up the flag pole soon. Look for someone relatively unknown. Maybe they have figured out vetting isnt so bad.
If the legislatures get the power to pick, all bets are off and it may be DeSantis.

(6,723 posts)Charlie Crist is polling slightly ahead for governor. He has done too much nazi shit here and it's gotten negative attention I don't think he counted on. And don't forget about Tuckems. GQPers love them some celebrities.

But not in the usual way. How can you be heir apparent of Trump when he's running?

(27,817 posts)... someone who's not even on the political radar screen right now.
I think someone is going to come out of left field (okay, right field in this case). He's going to speak about the future of the GOP, and about 'traditional conservative values. He's going to talk about improving lives going forward, instead of getting revenge on the Dems.
He's going to address kitchen table issues instead of 'owning the libs'. He's not going to praise Trump OR bash him. He's going to focus on his own agenda.
In reading/listening to Republican pollsters, one subject their voters keep raising is that they're "tired of all the drama". I think the GOP voters are starting to realize that the Trump Circus was entertaining - but it's time to get back to doing the people's business. "Owning the libs" sounds amusing when screamed through a bullhorn - but it doesn't put food on the table, or put a kid through college.
People like DeSantis and Cruz are embracing the extreme and the downright crazy, leaving the more level-headed GOP voters behind. As for the MAGAts, they love Trump, the man - and they're not terribly interested in a sound-alike who simply repeats what their Dear Leader has said.
This could actually be a golden opportunity for someone who is bright, articulate, and talks common sense - and possesses both charisma AND chutzpa. It would also give the GOP a chance to get back to "normalcy" rather than continuing down the self-destructive path they are currently on.
Just my two cents - and worth just that. But I believe the Republican party will implode if they don't make some extreme course corrections between now and 2024.

(42,770 posts)seem too strong still? Two years out that is. But always thought people started to run 2 years out. I think what you're saying will happen will. But maybe in 2028? Ahead of your time NG!!
You just described our new Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin, although I might dispute the charisma. Superficially, Youngkin appears to be a calm, rational man, but his behind the scenes comments and his political appointments reflect the sway of the far right. Youngkin appears to have no moral core; hell say or do whatever he needs to in order to win. IMHO, that is the kind of Republican who presents the biggest threat to people like DeSantis - and to our country. Waiting for a principled Republican to show up is like waiting for Godot.

(1,399 posts)Dont think the running mate matters.
I think Gavin Newsoms commercial in Florida is the first salvo of the 2024 battle (and no I dont think Biden will be running, sure he may say hes planning to but everything hes done since the Afghanistan withdrawal suggests otherwise). I dont necessarily think Newsom will be the nominee but I think hell throw his hat in the ring, heck he all but announced it with that commercial.
Bidens legacy will take a huge hit if he lets Trump run again without any consequences, and I think Biden is taking his legacy very seriously. I wouldnt be surprised if a quiet deal is made between DOJ and Trumps people that no charges will be brought against him if he never runs for office again. It would be an easy out for both sides and save the country a lot of anguish.
If for some reason Trump does run and survives a bloody primary with DeSantis I think either Liz Cheney or Adam Kinzinger will run third party as a break-the-glass emergency scenario.
