The fate of Steve Bannon, who once said that people should wear it as a badge of honor when someone calls them a racist, will be in the hands of a majority non-white jury.

I do realize that he'll blame his conviction (if it happens) on this fact. He can't help himself.

it's loaded with political hacks. Just in smaller numbers than dems, but they are there.

(12,428 posts)I'm not too worried about Loose Cannon getting off, especially in DC.

(3,523 posts)That's obviously no guarantee of anything, but it is a good sign.
And to be honest, I have been surprised by that. I would have thought most juries would have been poisoned with at least one die-hard Trumper-type.

(34,472 posts)and the few hard core types who do live in DC probably either weasel out of jury duty or were struck as potential jurors based on how they answered the questions. Of course its possible some are on the jury, but this is probably the least of our worries with everything else going on.

(53,841 posts)Both the judge and defense attorney admitted Bannon doesn't have much of a case.
getagrip_already
(14,837 posts)Yes, he doesn't have a case.
But this is a jury trial. One holdout juror could cause a mistrial or a finding of innocence (I'm not a lawyer and don't know dc court rules for misdemeanor trials).
It sucks in this case, but it usually requires a unanimous vote to convict.

(15,320 posts)Many lawyers say there's no such thing as a slam dunk. That doesn't mean his odds are great.

(1,670 posts)they couldn't get a conviction on Amon Bundy and company with video proof of them committing the crimes. So we need to remember that about 1/3 of the country don't believe it's wrong for "them" to break laws, but would send us to the gas chamber for jaywalking.

But far be it from me to ever call him a racist (I think his actions and words have done that far beyond whatever assistance I could offer with the utterance)

(22,048 posts)Trials really don't happen as they are depicted on TV or in movies. Juries look at the case as it's presented to them. Not everyone goes into the jury room with a political agenda. Most people want to do the right thing.
Bannon will be convicted. Even his lawyers know he's broken the law.
Try a little optimism.
SunSeeker
(51,678 posts)But at trials of celebrities, jurors often lose that detachment.
Bannon is so clearly guilty that the only way he could get off is through jury nullification, like happened at the OJ Simpson trial.
That is a funny image.
However, unless they hose him down first, I'm thinking that no one including Bannon himself will even notice.

(32,745 posts)I mean he is guilty of Contempt of Congress, am I right? The guy doesn't have a defense.
If the jury doesn't find him guilty then somebody is taking a bribe. What else can we conclude?
H2O Man
(73,605 posts)A person does not need to be bribed to reject the law. However, while this is Bannon's only hope, it is very unlikely.

(4,440 posts)#1. Did you receive the summons to appear?
#2. Did you appear?
If the answer is yes to the first, and no to the second, that is all that is needed to convict.
