(192 posts)I'd found a similar site when one of the last hurricanes devastated Crystal Beach and Galveston here in TX and to see the images overlaid like that really shows the impact.

I am North Jerseyan who has spent many a vacation at the Jersey shore. We have (had?) some great beaches, some of the very best in my opinion.
I always wondered when the next big one would hit. This storm is not really unprecedented except perhaps in its size. The Jersey shore has been hit many times but there has been nothing like this one in at least 50 years. In the interim, countless millions was spent developing the barrier islands.
Not to be cold about it, but there is a certain arrogance when somebody builds on the beach or on what in some cases were spits of land that were only a few blocks wide. The question is not if your house will get washed away but when.
It will be interesting to see if construction will be allowed as close to the water as it was. I suspect that it will be, as money will triumph over longer term thinking. People just need to understand that they really don't own their beach homes. They are just borrowing the spot from Mother Nature until the next big one.
