I just spent an hour looking into using a solar powered battery charger, I run around turning off lights, using my hybrid car and doing all sorts of little things that I can do to try and save energy and this planet. And then I read about these pampered people who couldn't care less about how they pollute and how they do it in such a big way and it makes my blood boil. If I knew what busines she was in I'd boycott it but I don't even know how she makes so much money.
I'd also like to know how these private plans are more polluting than a commercial plane except for the fact that they only carry 1 or a few people AND I'd like our congress to enact carbon taxes on them.
--------------------------------------------------------------
Soon after, Twitter unearthed her planes flight history, showing a habit of taking absurdly short flights. She ostensibly hops on her jet to take flights that are regularly less than 15 minutes, and in one case, a trip from Camarillo to Van Nuys took approximately three minutes. A private jet like Kylie Air, which Jenner bought for $72.8 million right before the pandemic hit, can emit over 2 tons of CO2 and is five to 14 times more polluting than a commercial plane.
Kylie Jenner cannot be bothered with traffic. The billionaire is facing backlash over her private jet usage, after receipts show her taking minutes-long flights across town to avoid what would have amounted to 40-minute car rides.
The criticism first began brewing when Jenner posted a photo on Instagram on Friday of her and the rapper Travis Scott embracing near their respective private jets (and a Rolls Royce). You wanna take mine or yours? she captioned the photo. Commenters quickly pounced on Kylies post as an out-of-touch display of opulence, while also noting how environmentally damaging private jets are.

(7,337 posts)I don't know anything about this person, but when I read that she flew from Camarillo to Van Nuys, I was like, ok, yeah, I get it. (!!! No!! Not actually, but having done that drive a million times, I could relate to the temptation...)
But seriously, tax the living hell out of that stuff, at a level that makes them think twice!

(3,871 posts)How do you tax "excessive" private travel?
She paid sales tax and property tax on the plane, she pays fuel tax on the fuel, she pays whatever airport taxes/fees/surcharges to takeoff and land, etc.. How do you determine how much to add on top of that because her use of the plane is excessive, inefficient or irrational? And would that tax apply to any kind of unnecessary or inefficient form of travel? Or just for those over a certain wealth level? If I blow through a 20 gallon tank cruising dirt fire roads getting 10mpg in my old Jeep should I be taxed above and beyond the same 20 gallons at 35mpg in my Civic going to work?

(22,506 posts)Maybe another tax on personal planes or a tax on their hangers? I'm sure they can figure out a way. Then they can use that money to build machines to clean the filthy dirty air that these people leave behind. Or maybe they can just plants trees with the money. How about every time one of those things is fired up they have to pay for 1,000 new trees to be planted?
That is not even that much. I have bought clothes from Ten Tree. They plant 10 trees for every shirt you buy.

(24,380 posts)The second part of your question is the answer.
Its basically a pounds per mile type calculation.
An airliner with 200 people on board burns less fuel per mile per person moving those people 1000 miles than a private jet does moving just 3 or 4 people per mile virtually any distance.
Edit; The article states there is a Rolls Royce in the background of the photo they posted from her Instagram. Its not a Rolls. Its a Maybach which is basically a Mercedes S-Class gussied up to sell for up to and over $200,000

(3,361 posts)the planet survive 'as is' is not based in any measurable way on the excesses, excuses, or apathy of anyone else.
I realize the small sacrifices she and I have made, make, and will make in our lifetimes are wiped out by just three minutes of a Trump or a Musk or a Jenner engaging in their decadent excesses. But it won't stop us. At all.
Reduce, Renew, Reuse, Recycle.

(111,110 posts)...and the fact that they are polluting the air above us in such massive quantities, it seems to be a problem no one wants to talk about, because of the nature of the business, and if they are not the major reason our environment is deteriorating at such a rapid pace?

(22,506 posts)an airplane. I wonder what effect it would have if private planes were banned for a few months. I wonder if the air would clear up at all.
I remember after the Covid lockdown seeing the air pollution clearing around China. It was really nice.

(24,380 posts)It is all because Kim did a sex tape and she has a huge ass. That and the fact that her late father and namesake defended OJ Simpson.
She capitalized on the irrational yet enormous interest in her sex life and her enormous derrière. Her sisters just jumped on those coattails. The two younger ones (Kylie and Kendall) have both had plastic surgery and make their money putting their name on clothes made in sweatshops and, in Kendalls case, as a fashion model.
As others have said, the fact that they are famous and wealthy is a testament to how the American people will buy anything if it is aspirational. They see these people living a lifestyle they covet, and are more than happy to pay attention and cash to them in order to attempt to be more like them.

(24,380 posts)My brother has a great take on this sort of television (because thats basically what this all is - TV);
Some of this is inspirational, but most of it is aspirational. The inspirational TV that features individuals and families consists of people like
well
the Irwins, of Aussie wildlife conservationist Steve Irwin. Both his children seem to have followed in their fathers footsteps. Love him or hate him, Irwin did good things in promoting understanding of wildlife and his children are carrying that torch. That is something that inspires people to be better humans. Same thing with Anthony Bourdain. Every Show he did inspired people toward a better understanding of their fellow man, to venture forth and meet, eat with and talk to the other inhabitants of this planet. No Reservations and the other shows he did were said to be the only TV shows in history whose sole purpose was to try and get their audience to NOT BE AFRAID TO TRAVEL! This is extraordinary when you think about it.
The Kardashians on the other hand, are the complete and destructive opposite (and include the Real wives of
franchises), as their entire content is/are strictly aspirational. They are presented as people others should aspire to be like, but they do not inspire people to lead better lives in the least bit.

(90,837 posts)He told me about the time a private plane parked and kept the engines running. And running. And running. And running.
Usually people dont pay a lot of attention to the airport because its close to the beach and aircraft steer in and out from the ocean side. But this noise people finally started phoning in to ask wth was going on.
Turned out the Shahs kids were in Santa Barbara for the day, and they told their chauffeur to just keep the engine running till they got back. However long that took.
