This was confirmed by intelligence and head of Luhansk Military Administration.

(19,204 posts)Ukraine has been knocking them down as soon as the Ruskies can set them up.
It's getting so anyone who's been in the Russian Army more than two months is promoted to General now. It's not a position any young man in a Russian uniform aspires to, I'll tell you that.
GO GET'EM UKRAINE!

(47,324 posts)The death rate is so high and so are desertions.
Desertions are for good reasons.

(19,204 posts)or this war have much longer to go. I think Putin's days on this earth are a lot fewer than they'd like us to believe. I also think once Putin is gone, this war is over as well.
Whoever Putin has picked as his successor may have to promise a continuation of the war to him now, but once he's dirt-deep I can't see any rational person carrying this on. Russia is a pariah on the world stage, and to allow the country to progress into the 20th century - let alone the 21st - this aggression has to stop. Anyone without a head full of cancer can recognize that.
I'm counting down the days until 'Swan Lake' is in a continuous loop on Russian State Television. 😊

(47,324 posts)Putin plans to wear down Ukraine until the people are totally demoralized and beg Zelensky to surrender. Putin has kidnapped about 2 million Ukrainians and moved them to camps in Russia. Putin wants to replace the population in Ukraine with Russians.
Putin could also take Kiev by gradually planting his puppets until they get rid of Zelensky and take over. Zelensky has been on to this plot and firing turn coat officials, but Putin is good at installing his puppets, look how well he has done in the US.
Putin plans to use his KGB skills to continue to destabilize the west, planting his puppets in France, etc. Putin has already been quite successful in destabilizing the west and the giving rise to radical candidates who support him.
Reports I have read said Putin may have three years to live. He is the richest man in the world and has world class oncologists on call 24/7.
This is really not about Ukraine at all. Putin and Xi of China wish to change the world order.
They wish to be sole superpowers, with Putin ruling the West, Xi the East.
If they cannot get regional control first, they cannot move on.
China will get Taiwan. Russia will get Ukraine. They are stepping stones to higher goals.
I am certain there are top Russian officials who totally buy into this world view.
And they probably don't want to get on the bad side of China and stop the deal Putin has made with China.
China takes the long view and they will most probably become a world superpower and very soon. And they will help Russia as well.

(3,157 posts)there are American ex-military and intelligence, now civilian boots on the ground. the Ukrainian Army has been trained by the CIA. they have information from many private entities, tech and otherwise. there are still Ukrainian civilians in these areas reporting troop movements. i expect the courthouse security cameras etc. can be monitored remotely.
they have the intell, the challenge is being able to act on it.

"proxy war" term is being used by those against helping UKR

(7,133 posts)I consider myself a very progressive and proudly "far left" person, but the term "proxy war" is being used by pro-Russia people who are so far left (Susan Sarandon types) that they are intersecting with the pro-Russia far right (Tucker Carlson types).

It's hard not to feel a little sorry for these poor bastards. You know this is not what they signed up for, if they signed up, at all. The next development will be of a code at home that allows families to talk to each other about, say, penguins, sharing their information.
The Kremlin is flirting with another revolution. It won't happen soon, but it will happen if they don't manage to find a way out of Ukraine.

(111,332 posts)to wear their dress uniforms in parades, and to be part of a well respected military that would repel anybody dumb enough to invade Russia. Yay team.
They certainly didn't sign up to dig trenches in the Red Forest or get blown to bits when their line of tanks stalled when they ran out of gas.
One thing this war has made glaringly obvious is their flawed command structure, something that has allowed to sociopaths to run amok.

(12,423 posts)the average enlisted soldier, along with the NCO's and mid level Officers didn't want to go to Ukraine, they thought they were in the military to defend Mother Russia, not rape and pillage another country.
oldsoftie
(12,587 posts)Russian troops have to constantly be told what to do. When you kill those who are tasked with telling them what to do, the regular troops have no idea what to do. Western military philosophy generally informs troops to the man on objectives. Losing an O4, for example, wouldnt stop a mission. It likely would with a RUS mission.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,423 posts)that's why the US military, along with NATO, are taught to go for the Russian command and control vehicles, once they're taken out, the Russian offensive stalls due to lack of leadership, whereas western militaries are much more flexible leadership wise in the field.

(12,587 posts)I'd bet they knew their policies were flawed, but they'd never take the chance on actually trusting their troops.
I would think the same applies to China as well. Definitely NK.

(12,321 posts)UA is circling the invaders near or in Kherson where invaders are trying to now flee, run like Hawley, get out of Dodge pronto. Russia is asking for a safe route for them to leave, but UA ain't having it and told them they must surrender and give up all their weaponry. Meanwhile asswipe Russia again has not honored the very recent signed agreement with Turkey and Ukraine for safe passage of grain. Russia bomb a grain terminal in Odessa.

(12,587 posts)The Russian forces there are depleted because of troops being sent to UKR. Now is the time to try to retake what ws lost 20+ years ago. Make them pay to stay. Russia cannot fight a two front war.
Georgia can have a whack at it as well. Why not.
reACTIONary
(5,771 posts)... That would be considered offensive escalation, rather than defensive. The US is already holding back weaponry that could reach into Russia, even though UA said they would not do that.
