report which will be used by the judge to determine a sentence. They will conduct an interview with Bannon and also speak to family members and other people familiar with him, verify work history, education and the like.
It's an involved process. Probation has a limited number of people who do this and these days in DC there are a fair number of these that need to be done.
I think it's a little unusual to order this for a misdemeanor conviction though.

then he is going to appeal.

Any guesses for his sentence? I'm guessing between 60 days and 6 months.

The process shifts from proving guilt to identifying the appropriate sentence. Both sides make filings arguing for what they think the punishment should be. There’s also an analysis of the criminal’s prior history.

it makes it appear they have to study all the legal cases over the last 200 years. Look at SCROTUS they had to go back to what the 1300s to make a decision. In reality they knew the answer when they were sworn in
