Rep. Elaine Luria (D-Va.), a member of the House select committee investigating the Jan. 6, 2021 Capitol riot, said that the Department of Justice should criminally investigate former President Trump, reiterating a call other members of the panel made Sunday.
I can tell the Department of Justice is watching our hearings closely. There have been cases of criminal defendants who have been charged and found guilty for events on January 6th, and they have actually quoted testimony from the January 6th witnesses and hearings, Luria said in an interview with moderator Chuck Todd on NBCs Meet the Press.
The Virginia congresswoman called on Attorney General Merrick Garland to act, saying she knows Garland has been monitoring the hearings.
If hes watching today, Id tell him he doesnt need to wait on us, because I think he has plenty to keep moving forward.

(6,565 posts)the less likely it is that we will see any accountability for the attempted coup. The J6 Committee is telling Garland to act. Prosecuting the low hanging fruit is not enough. He needs to prosecute Trump.
I don't want to believe that Trump was allowed to sit in his dining room watching on TV while people died in a coup attempt that he orchestrated, but believe it I do. We can't get him on failure to do his duty, but Garland can prosecute him for organizing the coup attempt to begin with. Sedition is a nasty charge.
We all appreciate the need to avoid failure in a prosecution, but not just to keep his branch looking good. History is full of heroic men who advanced despite knowing that they would fail.
Yes, we will probably never see the Orange Turd in a jumpsuit and cell, but that is not for us to say, anyway. He should not get a pardon, however. I'd like to see him stripped of his citizenship and shipped off to whatever other country that would accept him for his hostage value.
I want Trump prosecuted. I don't want to wait. I'll go with what the esteemed, educated J6 Committee is telling Garland. Prosecute this bastard! He is a danger to our democracy, and he is gearing up to run for a second term. Why should we go through all of this a second time when we have him by the shorty shorts. Because Garland wants to protect his branch??

(15,656 posts)And the committee members dont know any more about the DOJs investigation than you or I do, which is how its supposed to be, and is perhaps why they are expressing their frustrations.
Wheeler takes the same public information, and puts it into context, which I find helpful in sustaining my patience and increasing my understanding.

(15,656 posts)Standard DOJ procedure is there is a firewall between DOJ and the WH, and DOJ and congress.
Unlike the Gang Of Eight who receive intelligence briefings, nobody in congress gets briefings or other inside information about ongoing investigations, although Im sure there are some members who would like to know about the status of investigations into their own crimes
So, because of that policy, the members of the committee dont have access to any more information about the status of DOJ investigations than you or I do.

(1,259 posts)You are still spreading baseless information and doubling down doesnt make it so.

(15,656 posts)As it is far from baseless; Marcy keeps the receipts, and links to the evidence (including court reports and transcripts in many cases) supporting her claims.
In contrast, those complaining about the DOJ, including the committee members, are basing their complaints on an absence of public information.

(15,265 posts)Given a very large agency with lots of resource, over 18 months of time, and the urgency of the issues at play, that's a paltry list of actions.

(15,656 posts)Matthew Graves is the lead prosecutor for the January 6 investigation, and has only been on the job since last November. Before him, it was a Trump appointee. The list of public actions taken by DOJ since then is pretty impressive IMO, especially since it would tend to indicate an even larger number of actions that havent yet become public information (grand jury actions are secret).

(11,445 posts)Garland would start indicting TFG and his henchmen. If not, him, Biden, Nancy, could be the first ones they come for when they take power. If they take power they will start hanging people.
