Marc Short, who was chief of staff to Vice President Mike Pence, spat fire at Rep. Matt Gaetz (R-Fla.) on Monday after the congressman told students at a conservative conference over the weekend that Pence “will never be president.”

“Well, I don’t know if Mike Pence will run for president in 2024,” Short told CNN’s Erin Burnett. “But I don’t think Matt Gaetz will have an impact on that. In fact, I’d be surprised if he was still voting. It’s more likely he’ll be in prison for child sex trafficking by 2024. And I’m actually surprised that Florida law enforcement still allows him to speak to teenage conferences like that. So I’m not too worried about Matt Gaetz, thanks.”

3. Have fresh respect for Short. Gaetz's daddy has a mess of political influence in FL, so Matt may

end up in a cushy lock-up like Ghislaine Maxwell has. She landed in a Tallahassee facility that offers athletics and "individualized arts and crafts" classes. Seems that sex trafficking doesn't carry the penalties that stealing a car does.

Many of These hot-shot Republicans are always so gifted in terrific comebacks that combine irony, humor, and poignancy. I am a lifelong democrat and with very few exceptions during my 70 years, when presented with a statement or question such as Marc Short fielded, a Democrat would say “Well, let’s see how the case is adjudicated and then I might be able to comment”. To paraphrase Michelle Obama, when they go low we go dull.

7. What he said, regardless of the irony or humor, is not really the important point in my mind...

...it's the ongoing civil war going on in the Republican party right now that allows folks like Short to comment at all that is the real big deal here.
