I saw that clip of Cancun Cruz at the big RW show recently. I think it was on Seth Myers, where he walked out to a light show and pyrotechnics. The rocks stars of the GOP. It was so utterly ridiculous I cant believe those fools believe all the shit they say. They are like toddlers who witness their cousin acting out and getting a lot of attention (in this case the chief toddler trump). They saw how it worked for him and have decided whole heartedly to follow suit. Their rallies are like a pro wrestling shows. All glitz and BS and a certain rabid element loves it. So they play the game while they work to screw over those adoring fans.
I can understand it, by just acting like a loud mouth fool they can lock in a significant number of voters who dont pay attention and only care about a few emotional issues. Of course a good many of them are just loud mouth fools but I think there are plenty of old school rethugs who just play along so they can focus on cutting taxes for the rich and sticking it to the little guys who swarm to their rallies. It all makes it that more imperative that TFG and his goons get taken down, hard. Anything less will just encourage this kind of theatrical BS going forward.

(25,265 posts)It's gone to their heads and now they believe they can say and do anything and they would still have their groupies.
I think if someone made up 'Politician Cards' (like baseball cards) and sold them in packs of bubble gum - there would be a lot of American's collecting them and saving them.
You see these politicians as guests on talk shows. They come on to thunderous applause and they put on just like movie and TV stars. They crack jokes and then they spew the BS that they get fed by their Party.
This is especially true with Repug politicians.
I'm curious if other DU'ers here hold my same opinion?

(10,235 posts)Not sure about baseball cards, they were kind of factual. To sell in todays market theyd have to mix a little fact with innuendo, maybe some gotcha pictures. But actual statistics like voting record.

The question is, why would people vote for fake wrestlers to run the government? They must really want to destroy it.

(94,702 posts)When Parties were mainstream, the way you stood out was to express opinions on the fringe (right or left) of your Party. As both Parties have moved away from the center, its necessary to become even more extreme to be noticed.

Ted Cruise says he wants to repeal Texas sodomy laws. Guess he must be trying to distinguish himself from the furthest right crazies? Quel surprise...

(24,436 posts)But whether or not they actually believe it, when they say things that are crazy and false it still influences and disinforms people which leads to direct harm, January 6 being the ultimate example. Some of those people who stormed the capitol REALLY believed what Trump was saying and felt that their actions were therefore wholly justified. But the lies also hurt women, LGBTQ people, and other minorities. How did years of lies about abortion not help contribute to ridiculous and harmful laws restricting abortion and ultimately Roe being overturned? When lies are spread about Monkeypox being connected to gay and bisexual people, it's going to harm them. When lies are spread about Transgender children, it leads to laws preventing them from getting the help they need or being kept out sports. The motive for spreading false and misleading information is ultimately less important than the effect IMHO.
