Uncompromising positions and loaded rhetoric on key social issues are escalating concerns within GOP circles that the party is moving too far out of sync with popular opinion, projecting new hostility to gay people and potentially alienating women voters in high-stakes races.
The Supreme Courts decision overturning Roe v. Wade and ending a nationwide right to abortion last month has spawned strict new bans and stirred fears that gay rights and access to contraception could be next shifting the focus from other culture-war battles where Republicans felt they had a winning message.

(33,447 posts)A couple of weeks ago, I saw "Roe, Roe, Roe Your Vote" in the sig of Sky Jewels and thought it might stick with people better if it was filled out more.
I think Roe is the issue that most motivates because it is rage-worthy. It's putting women in extreme danger right now. That 10 year old in Ohio is not going to be forgotten.

(12,449 posts)it's about politics and what gets them elected, oh, and of course, money.
I'm flabbergasted that they so misjudged the anger and outrage, especially among women, of Roe being overturned.
What? Did they think that women would come flocking to them because of Roe? If that's what they thought, they badly miscalculated.
But we all know the overturning of Roe is all about control of a woman's body and making women 2nd class citizens.

(15,282 posts)For a very long time, and for many brain-dead American voters still, "there's not a dime of difference" between Republicans and Democrats. Anyone trying to tell them that Republicans are extremists has been written off as shrill and partisan.
Many people simply will not permit themselves to believe that there's any such thing as an extremist party in America. Most of the people who are willing to think that there are extremists in America are Republicans who view anyone left of Ted Cruz as "the extreme radical left".
Republicans have been totally free to fire up their base, and make that base more rabid and virulent in the process, with barely any consequences from other voters outside that base. "Moderate" Republicans and swing voters haven't allowed that extremism to penetrate their awareness and turn them against voting Republican.

(82,849 posts)Connect one more dot, and you might start seeing the picture. Why do you suppose Republicans are trying to disqualify so many citizens from voting? Why do you think Republicans are pushing this independent state legislature nonsense? Why is it that so many districts are gerrymandered in favor of Republicans by Republican-dominated legislature? What sort of representation do you think will result when the minority party forces its way into a legislative majority?
Republicans can't be anything but extreme if they want to be relevant at all.

These evil fascist fucks are gonna get a nice surprise on Nov. 8.
Edited to say: 8 million (vast majority pro-choice) young people aged into voting since 2020. And about 6 million Silent Gen, Boomers, and old Gen Xers have died. Even if only a quarter of the young ones vote, it could still make a huge difference in a lot of races.

(52,332 posts)Republican leaders literally convinced their followers to kill their parents and grandparents by seeking, acquiring, and spreading a contagious, lethal disease.
They didn't phrase it that way, of course, but that's what they did.
And also of course, if they gain in the midterms (by hook or by crook), they will instantly abandon any reservations and merrily continue their relentless march towards dictatorship and genocide.

Conservative courts, overflowing prisons, 1st Amendment shit, Social Security, Medicare, Medicare and schools privatized, abortion illegal, Griswald overturned, marriage restricted, draconian banking laws, strategic alliances destroyed, scapegoating of those people, and on and on.
Trump would HAVE WON RE-ELECTION in 2020, but for the fact that Trump was Trump!
With the eager and willing help of the GOP.
