Many people simply will not permit themselves to believe that there's any such thing as an extremist party in America. Most of the people who are willing to think that there are extremists in America are Republicans who view anyone left of Ted Cruz as "the extreme radical left".

Republicans have been totally free to fire up their base, and make that base more rabid and virulent in the process, with barely any consequences from other voters outside that base.
