The drug commercials that say Do not take X if you are allergic to X is plain dumb.
How do I know Im allergic to it if Ive never taken it before?
And if I have had an allergic reaction, do I really need them telling me not to take it again?
Its only because if someone has an allergic reaction and dies, the corporate lawyers can say, lol, we told you so!

(4,209 posts)I like the ones that say something like "tell your doctor if you have liver cancer"...no, the doctor should be telling ME if I have liver cancer!

(65,159 posts)We have an interesting relationship. He knows my background, naturally, and wants to talk physics, chemistry & cosmology.
Of course, I have no serious chronic health issues, so he's not ignoring any elephants in the room.
But, we've talked about this and he really hates these ads.
He's had patients ask about that psoriasis drug only to have him tell them they have acne, not psoriasis.
He's all for getting patients informed, but hates those spots.

(593 posts)I always have a sneaky way of finding out their political leanings. Both of my last 2 doctors were liberals (makes sense - intelligent and educated) and we have fun talking a little about politics.

(593 posts)I have severe spinal stenosis of several foramen in my neck. Very bad aching pain. I went and asked my doctor for pain medication. Right off the bat she goes into a lecture about opioids. I think she thought I was pulling a fast one. I had to remind her about gabapentin (Neurontin) which is specifically for nerve pain and is not easily abused.
She then wrote me a script and it changed my life!

(29,699 posts)There is one now that warns of possible heart attack, stroke, sudden death and other bad things. Like Im going to ask for that one!
Yes, these ads should not be on TV. The drug companies WANT you to ask your doctor about them, and make the commercials seem like youll spend the rest of your life running through a field of flowers. Disgusting.

(94,713 posts)Either you know from previous experience. Or you should be TALKING TO YOUR DOCTOR before trying any new medicine.
Would you offer they not inform you of risks?

(593 posts)Im afraid Im confused about the meaning of that sentence. Are you asking if I think doctors should inform you of the risks of taking a certain medication? YES!
Although from my experience they are a little light on telling you side effects unless you ask.
My original post was talking about the ads telling you not to take a medication if you are allergic to it. I was just pointing out the humor in that statement.
