Fact check: Scientists at CERN are not opening a 'portal to hell'

The claim: Scientists at CERN are communicating with demonic entities and opening a portal to hell
In April, scientists at the European Organization for Nuclear Research, or CERN, restarted their particle accelerator – the world's largest and most powerful accelerator – after a three-year hiatus.

The accelerator, the Large Hadron Collider, had undergone repairs and upgrades, and scientists plan to use it to crash protons together and learn more about the origins of the universe.

Nevertheless, social media users are suggesting that the machine has a different purpose. A Facebook post shared July 5 shows a TikTok video of a woman who claims that CERN scientists are using the machine to open a doorway for demons.

"If y’all don’t know about cern it’s a demonic/Evil machine that opens up portals to other dimensions/Hell/other spiritual worlds(not Heaven/or bosom of Abraham)and it brings in demons wicked spirits/High Evil Principalities," reads the caption of the post.

It is pretty absurd to give someone a national forum for their ideas just because they are a kook on tik tok. This is the modern day equivalent of the untreated schizophrenic with the “The end is near” sandwich board yelling on the corner.

8. That brings to mind a stand-up comedy routine I saw ...

... some years back.

The comedian started by telling of some very lucky person who had just won a lottery jackpot for the second time. He said some statisticians calculated the odds against that at something like six trillion to one. (I don't remember the number, so I'm just picking a very large number, which still will illustrate the principle I'm trying to describe.)

Then he started talking about the large hadron collider and some experiment that some physicists were running on it. He said that there was a trillion-to-one (again, just pulling a large number out of the air) chance that their experiments would create a mini-black hole that would start swallowing stuff up and eventually end up swallowing up the whole planet Earth.

So then his punch line was that those scientists were doing something that had a six-times-greater chance of ending our whole planet, than something that had already in actual fact happened.

He's a comedian and I'm not, but the way he said it was hilarious.

After I posted this, I Googled up an article about it that says it is not possible for the large hadron collider to generate a small black hole that could swallow up the Earth. Still, though, the comedian's routine was hilarious.
