Hes always been an asshole. Cruel jokes about overturning Roe are the latest evidence.
High off the fumes of the Supreme Courts decision to strike down the constitutional right to an abortion, a beaming Samuel Alito has emerged to try his hand at comedy. It did not go well. More critically, it further exposed an overtly political Supreme Court justice teeming with condescension for his critics.
I had the honor this term of writing, I think, the only Supreme Court decision in the history of that institution that has been lambasted by a whole string of foreign leaderswho felt perfectly fine commenting on American law, Alito said during a speech on religious freedom in Rome last week. The remarks, which emerged in video clips Thursday, prompted laughter from the crowd.
Alito went on to take specific aim at Justin Trudeau and Emmanuel Macron for condemning the decision to overturn Roe. As for Boris Johnson, who had also criticized the Roe reversal as a backward step, Alito joked that the British prime minister has paid the price, alluding to Johnsons recent resignation. He went on to sarcastically claim that of all the critics, it was Prince Harry who had really wounded me.
As astounding as it may be to watch a Supreme Court justice give such an overtly political speech, in many ways, this is perfectly fitting for Alito. As my colleague Stephanie Mencimer wrote after the Dobbs decision was handed down, Alito has long telegraphed a deep condescension for lesser morals.
This prick is thinks he's God's gift to the US. He's a complete asshole and misogynist prick.

It's a whole nother thing entirely to think the government should use its awesome power to eminent domain someone else's internal organs to force unwilling pregnant women to carry to term, even if raped, even if underage, even if it might kill the woman.
He and all the pregnancy slavers have been on this evil mission for their whole careers or lives even. Of course they're going to gloat. It's what evil jerk do.

(52,338 posts)or at least involuntary servitude. even if the original roe v. wade decision hadn't been made based on privacy, they still could have found a right to abortion based on the 13th amendment. forcing a woman to bear a child she doesn't want to is enslaving her to in service of the fetus, or in service of the state's supposed interest in the fetus.
there is no other situation under law, outside of prison, where anyone can be compelled to service and there's literally no way out of it. a pregnant woman can't even pay someone else to take it over for them. whereas, any job, any responsibility, the 13th amendment gives me the right to quit.
moreover, much of america's anti-abortion movement has its roots in slavery, particularly the period in the first half of the 1800s. after they banned "importation" of slaves and before the 13th amendment. after that point, the only way to get more slaves was to "increase the domestic supply" (a phrase from that era that the right wing justices used in their decision) by forcing enslaved women to bear more children. if those women had abortions, they would be "destroying property of the slaveowner", hence abortion was deemed to be a grave offense. not because they cared about their *property*, not out of any genuine concern about anyone's life.
in this context, the "no exceptions even for rape" makes perfect sense, because that's exactly what slaveowners did sometimes to produce more slaves.

(81,516 posts)Feels like it, anyway. Its perfectly reasonable subliminal messaging. The unsuspecting internalize it without even thinking, and the over-arching feeling is of woman as less-than. Woman as property. Woman as something to be restricted and managed and CONTROLLED.

(52,338 posts)if i reasonably think someone might cause me physical harm, i can defend myself.
if i reasonably think i'm in mortal danger, i can use lethal force.
in some states, i don't even have a duty to flee to safety, i can stand my ground and shoot to kill.
and of course i'm under no duty to try to determine their "intent". it doesn't matter if the other person is hypnotized or on drugs or temporarily insane or being coerced or was brainwashed. or maybe they're unaware that they're doing something that might be dangerous to me.
*their* innocence doesn't matter.
i still have the right to protect myself.
but a pregnant woman in certain states now would be committing a crime by protecting herself, even if her life is in danger.
oh and by the way, there's no such thing as a perfectly safe pregnancy. great medical care can certainly help, but there's always a risk in any pregnancy.
it is beyond ridiculous to require a woman to suffer for 40 weeks against her will, including risk of death, when i can shoot someone who sneezes while holding a snickers bar in the dark because "ah wuz skerred".

(1,159 posts)What did Mencimer mean when writing that Alito "telegraphed a deep condescension for lesser morals?" What the hell are "lesser morals?" Alito is definitely not of high moral character no matter how highly he thinks of himself, but is Mencimer's phrase suggesting that choice/body autonomy connotes lower morals?
