The Media
We know about Fox. They are what they are.
MSNBC likes to sound lefty but NBC calls the shots and even your favorite host has to toe a line. Wooing :cough: moderate :cough: GOP types and retaining the likes of Andrea Mitchell and Chick Toad.
And then there's CNN (reported here on DU in a number of posts by others) who, with their new leader, openly making clear their interest is having significant GOP representation on their network. They may even go so far as removing the likes of Don Lemon and Brianna Keilar from their programming.
We're going to have to find a way to overcome this latest speed bump.

(5,560 posts)Surely there's plenty of advertising dollars to be made there. We are over half of the population, yet we have almost no media representation.

(5,560 posts)Like I said, we are more than half of the population and we only have MSNBC, and I would call that moderate at best. CNN, in my opinion is too conservative. And the other problem is accessibility, FOX is on any stript down most basic cable package, while in order to get MSNBC, you'll need an upgraded package. Many people never even heard of it.

(62,451 posts)Since news became a profit center for media back in the Reagan days, liberals have been pretty much shut out. Right now the only small beacon of light that liberals have is Free Speech TV. As you note it is small. If they had funding (they live on donations) they could probably greatly expand their reach.
Al Gore had a presence that he sold. No liberals stepped up to buy it.
As far as some network going liberal, I highly doubt it. I always suspect MSNBC is day to day as far as being somewhat lefty. When you look at their hosts and commenters, it is not exactly a liberal bastion. Andrea Mitchell, Joe Scarboro, Michael Steele. Chuck Todd. Most every panel has at least one 'republican' of some stripe.
Couple of things:
1) Advertisers of the kind of size needed won't advertise on liberal programs. You can get some local liberal advertisers in a market like Chicago or Minneapolis, but not nationally. They won't advertise on a station that might be attacking them after their commercial
2) The few times liberals did venture into media they botched it pretty badly. Air America being the prime example. I have no idea why but liberal business people do not look at media as a good venture.
I tried to get some folks interested in liberal media in the early 2000 and ran into some really unexpected opposition from unions, politicians and others who I thought would be interested.
BTW I do watch and donate to Free Speech TV. Let me also give a shoutout to WCPT radio in Chicago and KTNF radio in Minneapolis. Great liberal radio stations.

CNN was in full tsk, tsk mode this morning (the few minutes I listened) about MI Dems supporting Meijer's primary opponent. Host was interviewing Buttigieg and, when Pete wouldn't respond to the question, said something like, 'well, I'm sure if you could, you'd agree it's disgusting.'

(6,265 posts)hit the ground running this star of the screen had them fawning, drooling and falling all over themselves to present that racist dog as some kind of moderate and it's only gone downhill since then in our media circus-infotainment propaganda disguised as journalism.
