Performatively protest: Grassley chastised for tweeting angry complaint he has to stay in DC to fight major Dem bill

U.S. Senator Chuck Grassley (R-IA) Friday afternoon posted an angry tweet complaining he will be missing his annual family reunion this weekend after Democratic Majority Leader Chuck Schumer scheduled a vote on the Inflation Reduction Act, major, historic legislation to combat inflation and climate change, lower Medicare prescription drug prices and the federal deficit, and increase the energy supply.
It's not going well for the 88-year old Republican who is running for re-election this year.
Leader Schumer in the past two weeks has pulled out a series of delicately balanced yet absolutely massive wins, convincing both Senators Joe Manchin (D-WV) and Kyrsten Sinema (D-AZ) to support the bill which they previously poised to oppose in different forms. It is a huge win for President Joe Biden and his agenda, the Democrats, and the American people.

(5,124 posts)See, Senator Grassley, you can tell your family that you stayed to make sure enough hot dog buns will be at the next cook out.

(13,529 posts)But then the grandson would have to run in 2024 for senate seat I think. Happened in MO with Mel Carnahan. He died in a plane crash along with his son about a month before the election. He went on to win, even though he was dead. His wife was appointed to the seat, but she had to run again within a year or two, and lost to a Republican. May have been Blunt that beat her, but not sure about it.

(23,252 posts)He lost to Claire McCaskill in '06. I greatly enjoyed campaigning for Claire; took great pleasure in that win.
I met Mel/Jean's daughter Robin in college (she was a freshman my senior year; she was in the intro PoliSci class I did a stint as a teaching assistant for--a bright young lady, later Secretary of State for Missouri and a US Senate candidate in her own right.)
I had totally forgotten about him. He really must have been Talent-less and forgettable.
I do remember the Robin being Secretary of State.

over 8000 rips on him.
And here is one from Michael Franken, Grassley's opponent in the Senate race:
"Sen @ChuckGrassley tweets the people's business keeps him from a family reunion," tweeted Admiral Michael Franken, Grassley's Democratic opponent in the November 8 election. "What a travesty! The horror!! Try deploying for a year in inhospitable places doing the Nation's business. Try telling your 4YO you'll see her after kindergarten graduation. Try retiring."

(22,144 posts)serving his voter base in Iowa 100%, but instead, take all of the leave that he wants, and complain if otherwise. He believes more in leaving his district in the lurch, not showing up to work (if he knows what 'work' means), etc.
Not looking good, Senator. Not looking good.
