(3,697 posts)Cummins has a long history as a forward thinking progressive company. We were the first in Indiana to provide full benefits for same sex partners. We had people protesting in the town square that were bussed in from other states. Our CEO and Board basically said "eff off" to all the detractors. We have had a travel benefit for when a person has to travel more than 30 miles for medical treatment for at least 8 years. The company considers abortion and sexual reassignment surgery the same as any other medical procedure. I'm sure there will be other actions beyond the lobbying at the state house to try and impact the decision. It's hard enough for the company to recruit college graduates to come work at a Corporate office in a small Southern Indiana town. This Abortion decision will impact recruiting and retention for companies. The new Cummins CEO is a woman but the male CEO who just left was also very progressive.

(26,587 posts)it would be a false equivalence to say that it was similar to the USSR, or even the current Russian Federation.
There were whole different countries as diverse as advanced Northern European Baltic states, Central Asian Muslim countries, ancient countries like Georgia and Armenia in the Caucasus. Different languages, different language families, and different writing systems. And that's just the official republics. There were many other smaller nations like Chechnya, where Russia fought two major wars in the 90's and early 2000's.
Definitely an apples and oranges comparison, without diminishing the very real divisions within our own country.

(10,024 posts)Being a taker state means that the state receives more in federal funding than its citizens pay in federal income taxes, which means that blue states are subsidizing the deliberate tax policies of red states, which keep their state income taxes low (mostly for the rich) so they will get more federal funding. Does anyone know what law provides for this inequitable distribution of federal funds? And can it be changed?
If red states are denying rights to women, is federal funding one way to punish them, without of course punishing the poor who rely on federal support for Medicaid and other programs? Im thinking more of discretionary state programs, such as transportation. Another option might be to move military bases out of anti-abortion states because female members cannot get the healthcare they need.
I know none of this is likely, but Republicans use every lever of government they can to take advantage while Democrats just try to be fair to everyone. While I live in Texas now, which is also a taker state, Ive mostly lived in blue states in the past and I do not see why the people in those states should be subsidizing Republican policies, especially those that deliberately hurt people.

(10,024 posts)It has a history of sexual assault and even murder. I havent heard of anything, but past commanders there seemed to buy into the Texas attitude that boys will be boys and no harm done with a few rapes. Fort Hood was the site of the murder of Vanessa Guillen, who was bludgeoned to death by a fellow soldier in 2020.
Ft. Hood should have been closed in 2020 when it had 16 deaths. The base had the highest number of soldier murders and sexual assault cases among all Army bases. The base commander was replaced, but in 2022 more sexual assaults were reported, and studies found that women soldiers there face more risk of sexual assault than any other Army base.

(10,192 posts)Good explanation.
This is the reason these states will Never secede from the Union. When the last civil war occurred, the seceding states had almost separate economies from the North. There was no redistribution of income taxes because there was no income tax.
Income tax started during the Civil War to pay for the war debts. Just another thing we can thank the South for.

(3,224 posts)They don't say they are moving any operations to another state
They don't say they will not hire more employees in Indiana
They are only "planning" their growth outside Indiana, not necessarily actually doing it.
They gain a lot from Republicans who believe it's okay for them to rip off Americans on drug pricing and a few bucks spent on campaigns for those Republican candidates along with paying for "issue ads" that don't "directly contribute" to those same Republicans. The same sleazes they elected now vote against ONE of their professed interests.
They don't say anything about right and wrong - just that it will make it hard for them to hire and retain some people (i.e. women who care about the issue). Not all women support that view as witnessed by the women in power who don't or who won't speak against their fellow right wingers.
The question is whether their stated concern is real or just a temporary thing until the next election or even possibly being undermined by private statements that "we really don't believe that but it makes for good political capital so don't worry about our support of the right".

(129,165 posts)Lilly announces $1 billion investment in new manufacturing facility in North Carolina
January 28, 2022
Parenteral and device manufacturing site will increase the number of people around the world who may benefit from Lilly's medicines
INDIANAPOLIS, Jan. 28, 2022 /PRNewswire/ -- Eli Lilly and Company (NYSE: LLY) plans to invest over $1 billion to create a new manufacturing site, along with nearly 600 new jobs in Concord, North Carolina. The brand-new facility will utilize the latest technology to manufacture parenteral (injectable) products and devices and increase the company's manufacturing capacity.
"Lilly is entering an exciting period of growth and we are committed to delivering innovative medicines to patients around the world," said Edgardo Hernandez, senior vice president and president, Lilly Manufacturing Operations. "Expanding our manufacturing footprint in North Carolina enables us to continue to produce today's medicines while providing additional capacity to manufacture the medicines of tomorrow. We are pleased to again partner with North Carolina to bring jobs to American workers and provide more medicines that patients need to address health challenges."
Lilly selected Concord because of the manufacturing technology experience of the local labor force; its proximity to universities with strong science, technology, engineering and math (STEM) programs; and its access to major transportation infrastructure. In 2020, Lilly announced a $470 million investment in North Carolina's Research Triangle Park. In conjunction with this site, the new facility in Concord will allow the company to strengthen relationships with local governments and universities and diversify its growing presence in the state.
Lilly plans to create nearly 600 new jobs for highly skilled workers such as scientists, engineers and manufacturing personnel, who will use advanced technology to produce life-changing treatments and devices to make life better for people around the world. In addition, an estimated 500 additional positions will be required while the facility is under construction.
"Lilly's choice brings more good jobs to North Carolina from one of our most important industries," said North Carolina Governor Roy Cooper. "North Carolina has become a premier hub for the world, thanks to our exceptional workforce and commitment to education."
Over the last five years, Lilly has invested over $4 billion in global manufacturing, including more than $2 billion in the U.S. The company also today announced plans to invest $500 million in a new biopharmaceutical manufacturing facility in Limerick, Ireland. Lilly anticipates additional future investments in manufacturing to address growth expected from potential new medicines to treat diabetes, Alzheimer's disease, cancer and autoimmune conditions.

(8,965 posts)Ignorance is not bliss. It might seem like good politics to keep people ignorant and angry. After all, that is how autocrats attempt to control people. However, at the end of the day, there are very real consequences for imposing theocracy where freedom of choice and a right to privacy once existed. Companies that intend to attract a diverse array of skills and talent are not served well by repressive state-level policies. Hopefully, this statement by Eli Lilly will be received as a shot across the bow by Republicans who saw the Roe repeal as a green light to f*** over their constituents.

Still it's good to see Eli Lilly of all companies finally doing something good for women. I hope many more take companies take similar stands - financial pressure and job losses may be the fastest way to get states with the worst restrictions to back down and repeal them. Money talks when jobs walk.

(6,278 posts)When Pence pushed the "Religious Freedom Restoration Act" at the state level (aka greenlighting homophobic discrimination) what got that shut down was corporate pushback. They knew they couldn't recruit talent to a Christian Taliban state, and Pence and allies retreated in disgrace, Pence losing face with his Christofascist base. Trump rescued him from political irrelevance by naming him as running mate.
This is just the beginning...
