They were designed to keep women from throwing babies in dumpsters. I thought they were a good idea at the time, and I think they are now.

However wrong I may think the anti-abortion movement may be, the “Baby Moses” laws designed to allow women to drop unwanted infants at fire stations and other places are a good idea. I do wish they were used more often: we still read or hear stories of newborns or young babies smothered or tossed in dumpsters.

Is there someone manning this dropbox 24/7? If not then it’s nearly as bad as throwing the baby in a dumpster.

at that location that are alerted immediately when the babies are put in. The boxes were designed to give women a "safe space" with no questions asked to leave their babies. Prior to that- and even still, particularly with teens- newborns were and are being dumped in dumpsters.

I am sorry things aren't perfect, and all babies are sweet, cuddly, clean, well-fed, loved and wanted.

I am all for these drop off locations. Go look at one- just google the closest one to your location- they were designed to be easily found. It will make you feel better.

walking upright. It's not going away, ever. Some women cannot get access to birth control/ abortion and they essentially kill their babies if there are no other choices.

Hell, there are animals that refuse to feed their offspring. Maybe it's just part of evolution? I have no idea. I would never judge those women.

She was also shocked and never heard of this. Her opinion it would probably be better for the child to be aborted than thrown in a dropbox. I think I agree.

the babies aren't "thrown into drop boxes."

Go visit one please. Seriously. The infants are taken care of immediately- and are safe, warm and comfortable.

It's Wikipedia, so apply all the usual Wikipedia caveats.

I've excerpted the U.S.portion below, but there's a lot more in the original about the history and practice around the world.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Baby_hatch

United States

The first two baby hatches started operating in the state of Indiana in 2016.[47] As of July 2021, there were 74 baby hatches installed in the US in five states including Indiana, Ohio, Arkansas, Florida and Kentucky.[48][49] All 50 states have introduced "safe-haven laws"[50] since Texas began on September 1, 1999. These allow parents to legally give up their newborn child (younger than 72 hours) anonymously to certain places known as "safe havens", such as fire stations, police stations, and hospitals. The laws have different names in different states, e.g. California's Safely Surrendered Baby Law[51] and some have different age limits, e.g. Nebraska's safe-haven law as originally written had no age limit, allowing all children under 18 years of age to be abandoned; this was amended in November 2008.[52]]

were placed at churches, the main police department, fire departments. When babies were left at these places, the daily newspaper would report a story and an appeal to the mother to come forward and get help so she could keep her baby. The boxes were a better option, imo, to just leaving an infant on a doorstep where some crazy or abusive person could take it to wherever.

In Medieval times, right up to early modern times, several convents had baby hatches. Both wealthy and poor women used them. They were a convenient place for a woman to anonymously give away a baby that resulted from rape, an extramarital affair, or an unmarried woman's affair.
