What would become of you if you put a box full of secret documents from your command into your vehicle, drove out the main gate and stuck that box in your bedroom closet. Would you be held accountable? Would you face consequences? Would your career be over?

(19,066 posts)Whats great about this question is they all were saying the same thing when Hillary had an e-mail server when she was actually the SOS so had compete authority to have them here we she wanted to. Trump is a private citizen, totally different thing.

(9,730 posts)Every piece of paper we handled was at least "CONFIDENTIAL" and a great deal of it was "TOP SECRET." Even my shorthand notes and typewriter ribbons had to be burned. I expect I would have been shot if I had tried to remove a box full of secret documents.

(3,396 posts)I had to have a secret clearance to learn the encryption & decryption techniques we used. I don't remember exactly how long it took, but I know it was at least 3 months and possibly longer before my clearance came through.
I got out of the Guard in Sept of 1970, but to this day I won't discuss what we did and used for those messages.
I ended up as a spec 5 (acting E-6) training those under me on the techniques.
Until I get written orders from the military, I will NEVER disclose what we used and how we used it.
I guess I'm a little different from TFG, huh?

Of course I would have been held accountable. Court-martial and a long prison sentence.

On the other hand I did not have the authority to classify or declassify documents as I wished. A President has that authority. That is something that is being overlooked in all the celebration.

(12,660 posts)If it were something that is over and not currently relative though still classified, it might not carry as long a sentence as, say Nuclear materials transit schedules over next fiscal quarter, but I'd still be looking at jail time.
