Everyone is hyperventilating over the doj having to have had some super secret Intel that let them get a warrant. How this has to be woven into Jan 6th investigations.
It wasn't. It was very straight forward and simple.
The doj knew highly classified documents were there because (a) they saw them in June, and (b) they have been in touch with trumps lawyers who likely confirmed they were still there.
Trump was unwilling to return them.
It would be a slam dunk to get a warrant to search and seize based on those conditions.
It's really simple. It's not political. It's a pedestrian physical violation of the law.
Note: I updated the title to demphisize "Raid", which this clearly wasn't.
The government wanted those documents back. It may or may not lead to charges, but the government had an over riding national security interest in recovering those documents.

(14,764 posts)Sometimes from people who didn't even know it was stolen.
Sometimes they charge them, sometimes they don't. It's up to them.
But I agree wholeheartedly that in this case, they raided crooks and thieves.
Will they charge? We won't know for months and months. And if they don't, we will never hear about it again.

(68,586 posts)country...as others pointed out he met with Orban and with the Saudis recently. And how did they know exactly where these documents were? Someone sold Trump out...maybe one of the SS agents just couldn't stomach what Trump was doing. Or may one of his so-called loyalists just couldn't go along with some nefarious thing and ratted him out to the January 6 committee who sent the information to the FBI...we may never know.

(2,113 posts)MFer's been out of office for over 1-1/2 years. There was no reason for him to still be in possession of those documents. Time to go get 'em.
Easy peasy.

(85,998 posts)...Nat Archives would have returned for them, instead of the FBI.
The FBI isn't just the NA's errand boys. They act on crimes committed, or suspected, not on some bureaucratic scavenger hunt.

(14,764 posts)The nat archives had been trying to get them back, but couldn't. so the fbi asked for them.
Apparently they didn't give all they had to the fbi the first time.

(4,913 posts)It could be simple, straight forward like you believe or it could be something else.

(14,764 posts)The FBI only searched mar a lago. They only knew of classified docs in that one location.
They didn't seize his phone(s), or search his new jersey or Manhattan offices. They didn't raid the royal family.
This was a very localized, and specific search.

(14,764 posts)They can seize any unrelated documents they find they may believe is evidence of a crime.
Just like if there was a brick of cocaine out in plain sight.
What they couldn't do was open up any area that wasn't explicitly mentioned in the warrant and search there. If the warrant only listed stolen vehicles and storage locations that could harbor them, they couldn't look through filing cabinets because they wouldn't be covered.
But I suspect those warrants are often broadly worded, especially for a document search, which could be anywhere.

(7,286 posts)thats the word TFG used to set the narrative
if they notified the SS and his lawyers ahead of time, its not a raid
they didnt break into the safe either, trump said that

(14,764 posts)swat's.
The fbi wore business suits. Not body armor and full tactical gear. Not even those cheesy wind breakers with the large letters.
The staff thought they were secret service.
Normal day. Nobody even knew.
NOT a raid.
