OLUMBUS, Ohio (Aug. 4 2022) A new poll from Center Street PAC, a non-partisan political action committee, shows Rep. Tim Ryan (D-OH) leads Republican J.D. Vance 49% to 38%, among Likely Voters, with 12% undecided. The numbers continue the upward trend in support for Ryan, whose lead over Vance among Likely Voters widened by 8 points, since a July 2022 poll.
While Ryan saw increases in awareness and favorability among voters, a more significant indicator is the decline for Vance in all areas, particularly in favorability. While 23% of voters view Ryan as Somewhat Unfavorable or Very Unfavorable, 46% hold unfavorable views of Vance, with 30% of those saying they have a Very Unfavorable view. By contrast, only 12% of voters are Very Unfavorable to Ryan.
With the election set to be close in November, independent voters will play a key role, and Ryan saw a significant increase with those voters, improving his lead from +8 in July (36% to 28%) to +21 (39% to 17%).

(68,586 posts)PA in terms of having a Grandpa in the cemetery, it is damn close. Vance is a carpet bagger from WVA...and Ohioans are many things but they are not what Vance likes to call "hillbilly". And Ryan has worked on the Delphi bankruptcy to help Ohioans, helped me get my tax refund, and has been part of a suit that GM violated the Union contract when they close Lordstown GM...which could result in a big payoff for GM union affected. There are Republicans and Independents who will vote for Ryan...fingers are crossed.

(68,586 posts)win a presidential race...check out the numbers. It matters! The guy who said that is not how Ohio is 'trending', Well, Obama took Ohio twice. There are many Democrats in Ohio. We have a weak party in my opinion. And need to make some changes.

Those who live in citires where the jobs are vote Democratic. The older rural Republican. Ohio is still mainly agriculture, but that is changing. The new Intel plant outside of Columbus will change everything.

(31,828 posts)Had a young woman tell me that on Sunday morning.
I asked her if she had a driver's license - she said yes.
I explained to her that before my husband was a citizen - he had a driver's license, and got called to jury duty twice. He couldn't serve of course, but still . . .
She wasn't aware of that.

(68,586 posts)done much for Ohio. He is well-liked. If anyone can take the Senate seat, it is him. He is from Ohio and went to school in Ohio and has been a big union guy. He grew up in Youngstown. He also is campaigning in every Ohio county like Fetterman and is running a factory town campaign.
I suggest before you cede the rust belt, you look at an electoral map( 270 to win). We have no path to the presidency without the rust belt. We need Virginia and all the rust belt states save Ohio. The other scenario is we need Ohio and all the rust belt states and we could lose Virginia. And consider we lost the governor's race in Virginia.
nycbos
(6,034 posts)I never once suggested "ceding he rust belt." I really want Ryan to win.
I just meant that I think this poll will end up being an outlier. We saw it in 2016 that GOP voters came home to Trump even though they might not have liked him.
Something similar might happen with Vance despite the fact he is an asshole.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)didn't say that you said that. I also pointed out that if we lose Virginia, we damn well need Ohio and I think we can win in Ohio. Ryan has been up the entire primary. Vance is not well-liked. Ryan has a history of being born in Ohio, lived here his entire life, and has helped many Ohioans. So I don't have a crystal ball and can't say for sure that he wins. But I think Ryan has a good shot. As for this being an outer, polls have shown Ryan ahead throughout the campaign.

(10,832 posts)Both these men are running great campaigns but their real advantage is knowing and understanding their constituency against two helicoptered-in candidates relying on their celebrity status and promises of an easy glide-path to victory. You cannot fake authenticity which is exactly what Oz and Vance are finding out.
One of the lamest and laughable approaches Oz took early on was trying to present himself as an 'Everyman'. He's dumped that but it was painful (also hilarious) to watch. Vance was a Never-Trumper until he turned into a Trump zombie. He's flip-flopped on every issue.
The disingenuous nature of both these Republican campaigns is off the charts. The super-power that Fetterman has had and is now streaming through Ryan's campaign is simple: Know and care about the people you would represent and walk the walk. Or as Fetterman would say--every county, every vote. The real work doesn't end until every vote is counted. Oz and Vance thought the Former Guy's endorsement was enough.
Clearly, it is not.
Demsrule86
(68,586 posts)This is just a stepping stone for something else for them. I don't believe either of them are good people. Vance is a grifter...and did himself real harm with his stance on the 10-year-old Ohio girl who was raped and became pregnant. As for Oz, he was called to testify about his lies about the shitty pills and other stuff he sold as a wonder drug for weight loss among other things.
