Police name suspect in killing of Muslim men

Detectives have detained a suspect in a string of killings of Muslim men in Albuquerque.

Muhammad Syed, 51, was taken into custody Monday night.

Syed is charged in two of the homicides — that of Aftab Hussein on July 26 and Muhammad Afzaal Hussain on Aug. 1.

Police say the evidence shows he knew the victims “to some extent” and a conflict may have led to the shootings.

Muhammad Syed, 51, was charged with the two murders, and will potentially be charged in the murders of two other Muslim men in the last nine months. Ahmad Assed, president of the city’s largest mosque, told The New York Times that authorities informed him the shooter is a Sunni Muslim who may have targeted the victims because he was angry over his daughter marrying a Shiite Muslim.
