(52,323 posts)it was inappropriate to laugh, and obviously so.
if someone is delivering a somber eulogy, it's inappropriate to laugh even if the person next to you is tickling you or whispered a joke or or if the speaker inadvertently misspoke in a way that in another context might be humorous.
laugh later in the car on the way home. don't laugh in the moment when talking about a tragedy.
unless it's culturally accepted in the situation. jews often make jokes and laugh at funerals because many jews laugh at adversity and often try to remember the good things about the departed rather than wallow in the misery of loss. but this is in a synagogue among jews who share that culture, and even then you have to "feel the room" first. we would never do that in a more public setting such as beto's event.
this guy was looking to be disruptive, and "gun ignorance" is a trigger for them.
as if people need to be experts on the specific taxonomy of guns to know that mass shootings are bad.

So happy Dems are all good looking, otherwise it would just be hypocritical.

(51,308 posts)I despise when people here start making fun of people's looks.
Kinda makes you wonder who was a bully in younger years, ya know?
We should try to be a bit better than that.

(11,744 posts)The AR-15 while not specifically designed for the battlefields of Vietnam, was definitely procured by the military at first, as a defense weapon for service members who were not on the front lines (whatever the hell that was in Vietnam), people like MPs, Base Security, etc... not necessarily people who were out in the field looking for a fight, but people who had to be ready quickly to be in a fight. Eventually, the weapon system replaced the M-14 because it was effective enough, it was more accurate, and service members could carry considerably more ammunition at lighter weights, which fit into the military's fighting strategy of suppression and movement.
The 5.56 round can definitely penetrate the helmets that were around at the time AND can defeat most body armor systems even now. IF the rifle was not en effective weapon of war, the US would not have kept it in service from the mid 60's to today. The AR-15 is popular among civilians almost exclusively because of its status as a military weapons system. If the AR platform and the 5.56 round had never been adapted by the US military and subsequently NATO (5.56 round at least), then the AR platform and the round would NOT be the most popular rifle for American civilians, it would be whatever the Military had adapted for use.
The concern in public safety circles moving forward is that the Military has adapted the XM5 rifle and 6.8 x 51 round, a considerably more powerful cartridge, to replace the AR platform and 5.56 round. When that system hits the civilian market, the fear is that it will create more danger to LE and civilians if used in criminal activity.
I am not a proponent of banning firearms. I prefer other methods of reducing violence in general, and firearms violence in particular, but when people mock and deride people who are trying to figure out solutions to the problem JUST because they may not have said a particular term correctly, or their answer is not 100% spot on technically flawless, that just make the pro-gun side look and sound stupid.

(3,931 posts)El Paso makes it part of his heritage. I believe he's always been called Beto. When we moved to Houston, the teachers and everyone changed my daughter's name, both in writing and verbally, from Jamie (hard Ja) to Jaime (Hi). You love tamales at Christmas, attend Quinceaneras, the wonderful cultural experience shopping Fiesta with bilingual loudspeaker announcements, the great humor, work ethic, and kindness of your neighbors.
