**Update** Agent: Salman Rushdie off ventilator and talking, day after attack

Some good news... Not many details otherwise.

MAYVILLE, N.Y. (AP) — “The Satanic Verses” author Salman Rushdie was taken off a ventilator and able to talk Saturday, a day after he was stabbed as he prepared to give a lecture in upstate New York.

Rushdie remained hospitalized with serious injuries, but fellow author Aatish Taseer tweeted in the evening that he was “off the ventilator and talking (and joking).” Rushdie’s agent, Andrew Wylie, confirmed that information without offering further details.

Earlier in the day, the man accused of attacking him Friday at the Chautauqua Institution, a nonprofit education and retreat center, pleaded not guilty to attempted murder and assault charges in what a prosecutor called a “preplanned” crime.

Lebanese-Americans tend to be well integrated into American life.

He probably was a loser who latched onto extremist ideas. (He was a supporter of Iran)

I read he worked out at the gym and didn't speak to anyone.

This is frequently used to denote that someone is in good spirits but it should also be remembered that said people are likely still on morphine. He's got a long road of recovery ahead of him & that should not be minimized.

to one arm (likely brachial plexus damage) that will leave it functionless, liver and other internal damage, and likely considerable additional damage to structures of the neck.

So, no, he's not out of the woods by many miles. But for those of us fearing he would not survive, this bit of news--just that he is off the vent and conscious--means everything.

This article was posted here earlier but I think it bears repeating, this incident teaches us we have to stop conflating words and violence.
