BERWICK — Authorities responded in force to the area of a Berwick bar Saturday after a driver plowed into a large group of people gathered for a fundraiser for the families of 10 victims who died in a recent fire in Nescopeck.

At least 13 people were being treated in area Geisinger facilities Saturday evening, a hospital spokeman said.

Police confirmed the incident is connected to a homicide that also occurred Saturday in Nescopeck after the Berwick incident and a suspect is in custody. Luzerne County Coroner Frank Hacken confirmed his office was called to the scene in Nescopeck.

Several helicopters were used to transport the Berwick victims to area hospitals.

“This is crazy. I didn’t even bury my kids yet,” said Nescopeck volunteer firefighter Harold Baker as he hugged a woman outside the Berwick crime scene, telling her other family members of his were hurt when the car ran into the crowd.

Baker’s son, daughter and three grandchildren were among the 10 people who died in the Aug. 5 fire in Nescopeck, which Baker responded to as a member of his department. It wasn’t immediately clear if either crime scene was connected to the fire.
