There are many other threats as well. The FBI agents involved in the search have been doxed. All relate to the self-inflicted legal travails on the Peach-toned Parasite.
This is coming from assholes like the assholes who invaded on January 6. Like the NailGun Bandidto.
I took from the report that the terror threat in the USA is pretty much what it was at the height of the threats from Middle East groups. The difference now is the terrorists are American citizens.

(1,096 posts)This is a truly shameful period in our history. The fact that these wackos are in the minority does not minimize the need for new and tough laws - laws with teeth - to combat the threats they pose and actions they take.
And an excellent place to start is with the politicians and media who encourage this behavior.

(21,466 posts)I am reading Malcolm Nance's book, They Want to Kill Americans. According to him, J6 was just the beginning of an ongoing insurgency that will continue and escalate until this extremist minority seizes control of the government - or, until it is defeated and outmaneuvered by the rest of us.
Remember how the overturning of Roe motivated us to GOTV? How we believed that we coule see a blue wave coming? That still might be true, but the MAGAs are now just as motivated and riled up over the FBI raid. I expect a huge dueling vote turnout this year, like the 2020 presidential election. And more intimidation and violence at the polls and during the campaigns, as well as more refusals to accept the outcome when Dem candidates win.
At the current rate, we will be lucky if we are not in an open civil war by the various election dates.
bucolic_frolic
(43,162 posts)and if Republican governors are willing to provide them combative support. Those two items would be a whole new ball game.
wnylib
(21,466 posts)It will consist of guerrilla terrorist attacks to frighten and demoralize citizens and make the government look weak and ineffective. Instead of soldiers confronting each other, there will be hit and run terrorist strikes.
In some red states the governors and legislators might openly back the terrorists. In other states, they might give passive support by not investigating incidents, not sending in National Guard to restore order, etc.

(1,138 posts)In my opinion, the Republican leaders will think it all the better if their minions continue to lack discipline, strategy, and discretion.
I think that the whole Capitol riot was a rehearsal not for an armed takeover of the US government, but for a delegitimization of an election. If a bunch of well to do yokels were to take over the government it would be difficult for the military and most oiligarchs to side with the yokels and support the insurrection, even though they might privately agree with them. But if, in the wake of large, violent, widespread uprisings by those same yokels the election is overshadowed, at least in some states, by questions of legitimacy state officials and courts who privately agree with the yokels will be able to decide the outcome of the election. Of course the useful idiot yokels will be thrown under the bus. I think that the real plan is bush v Gore redux. The yokels are just a colorful sideshow for a country where citizens have become consumers.

(58,656 posts)9/11 was a complicated plot that nearly succeeded 100% in it's goals. They took down the towers and damaged the Pentagon, but missed on the one aimed at the Capitol building. The real damage they did was to change the basic fabric of American security thought. It provided an external threat that diverted attention outside the country and led to the endless Middle East wars in Afghanistan, Iraq, and Syria. They're still fighting in Yemen (currently under a tenuous cease fire, I guess) and East Africa. Historically it has been established over and over. It's easier to start a war than to end it.
Meanwhile, domestic terrorists have been hitting us at least since the 90's. From Oklahoma City to Charlottesville to the Jan 6 attempted coup, the real threat has been RW extremist Americans. Most of the attacks have been smaller, and while they may have not been coordinated and organized, they have been related. The current epidemic of gun massacres have been by RWers mad at "liberal" powers that be.
The call is coming from inside the house.
MarineCombatEngineer
(12,378 posts)Our law enforcement/intelligence services and internal security were so focused on the external threat that they ignored the internal threats, despite the ACLU, NAACP, SPLC warnings of the rise of RW extremism.

(1,105 posts)I was just a wee tyke in 1956 so I wasn't aware of what was said at the time but I certainly was aware of it by the time I reached my teens.
There was this fella who ran the USSR back then named Nikita Khrushchev. He had a pretty complicated relationship with the US but since he came from peasant stock and wasn't really sophisticated and politically correct he did tend to speak bluntly and forthrightly about his feelings and beliefs. Lots of things to read about him and his relationship with JFK if you're ever bored and looking to spend some time. Anyhow, the quote that pertains to the current situation and will help put things into perspective is this:
We will take America without firing a shot. We do not have to invade the U.S. We will destroy you from within....
There are societies and cultures in the world that play the long game unlike us. They set plans in motion they don't expect to live long enough to see succeed. Unless we as a nation wake up we're going to see the end of our great experiment.
Just like we have a significant number of people in this country who don't care for living in a democratically elected representative form of government there have been, and currently are, many in the world who have been working for the overthrow of such an audacious form of self-governance pretty much since its inception.
Putin and his oligarchs are just one threat in a long line of threats. Does it end now? Kinda depends on us. I'd like to suggest doing everything in your power to get as many of the traitors out of office this November.

I loved the pictures of the mass demonstrations in Russia about Putin going to war in the Ukraine. There were like a thousand people protesting. Immediately, there were massively overwhelming numbers of soldiers corralling them, handcuffing them with zip ties, and herding them off to "somewhere"???
They did it every time there was any mass demonstration. The demonstrations against Putin have almost ceased to exist....
Our beloved Freedom of Speech, will have new "normal" in the future if Authoritarian Republicans take control of the nation.

His sick, stupid followers obviously don't believe in freedom of speech for us, but for them, it is a different matter.
And the Republicans LOVE IT THAT WAY..........just hear their crowd cheer at such an example of Trump's behavior above, set by their worshipped leader.....And they have Literally Highjacked and brainwashed the religious followers from believing in Christianity's God, to them worshipping and believing in Trump, their Newly Ordained God............

NNadir
(33,518 posts)I have lots of people with "degrees in science" working under me, many with Ph.Ds, a few score of them. Almost none of them understand a damned thing about nuclear materials because they were never trained in the subject.
As it happens my son is currently enrolled in a Ph.D. program in Nuclear Engineering, his reason being he is interested in saving the world. The technical issues are one thing; the fear and ignorance are others.
My Journal on this website refers to many thousands, if not tens of thousands, of references from the primary scientific literature discussing nuclear materials and other aspects of nuclear engineering.
I am an expert in nuclear energy because I trained myself to be one, over more than three decades.
The main difference between anti-nukes and anti-vaxxers is a matter of scale. Anti-vaxxers may be responsible for the deaths of millions of people, whereas anti-nukes are responsible for the deaths of hundreds of millions of people.
Why is this? Because air pollution kills between six or seven million people per year, without a peep from anti-nukes carrying on about used nuclear fuel and other junk like Fukushima, Chernobyl blah, blah, blah, blah.
It seems to me that our knee jerk anti-nuke community doesn't seem to recognize that vast stretches all over planet are on fire, that crops are failing around the world in extreme heat and extreme drought, and that people are literally dying heat deaths all over the planet.
To assert that used nuclear fuels are accessible to terrorists is garbage thinking, whether any particular anti-nuke knows or not.
Knee jerk anti-nukism kills people because nuclear energy saves lives:
Prevented Mortality and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Historical and Projected Nuclear Power (Pushker A. Kharecha* and James E. Hansen Environ. Sci. Technol., 2013, 47 (9), pp 48894895)
This particular thread, with a very silly title, is probably not the place to discuss this issue, but anyone is invited to fire off dumbshit anti-nuke rhetoric in any of the threads connected to posts in my journal.
As for this thread, it does us no good to engage the extreme fantasies of our "but her emails" media. It makes us look like fools. Fearing terrorists is, by the way, the goal of terrorists. We have always had right wing and religious terrorists, and without fail everyone of them from before Timothy McVeigh through Mohammed Atta and beyond has used dangerous fossil fuels diverted to weapons of mass destruction.
It would be interesting if people had the same knee jerk reactions to oil terrorism that they have for their fantasies of nuclear terrorism, or if they gave a shit that dangerous fossil fuel waste is killing the planet which is literally burning to death, but regrettably, that's not what is happening.
Have a nice Sunday afternoon and evening.

(68,576 posts)And I dislike the arrogant way you dismiss people who don't agree with you. But as you make your living in the field, I find your arguments unconvincing. "I am so smart and have people working under me...blah blah...There are undoubtedly pros and cons concerning nuclear energy. I don't dispute that. But as far as I can tell your opinion is not that of an informed scientist but of one who makes his/her living in the field of Nuclear Energy You feed at the trough so to speak. Thus, I must consider the probability that your opinion is biased and leads you to ignore the very real risks IE you may have a confirmation bias. Have a good day.
NNadir
(33,518 posts)In my opinion, anyone who thinks that a terrorist can isolate fission products or actinides from used nuclear fuel without being killed doesn't know shit from shinola about nuclear fuels. That's as obvious as the fact that the sun is lighting half of the Earth.
Basically I regard the claim to the contrary as talking out of one's ass.
After 20 years here, I'm used to the morally vapid shibboleth that the only reason to support a cause is for money, usually thrown around by bourgeois types because they refuse to believe that anyone can hold an ethical opinion without being paid for it, as it's beyond their limited ability to apprehend ethical issues.
This, of course, in my view, says more about the people making this representation than it says about me, but it's par for the course. It's been going on for decades.
Anti-nuke ignorance kills people, as strongly implied by the scientific reference co-authored by Jim Hansen, the famous climate scientist which I cite many times and cited above. Climate change is killing people, right now, and the world food supply is at risk, rivers are dying, fragile ecosystems are being desertified.
Again:
Prevented Mortality and Greenhouse Gas Emissions from Historical and Projected Nuclear Power (Pushker A. Kharecha* and James E. Hansen Environ. Sci. Technol., 2013, 47 (9), pp 48894895)
It speaks volumes, moral volumes, and is coauthored by a person who has cared deeply about the fate of future generations:
Storms of My Grandchildren.
I suppose someone could argue that his Grandchildren must be paying him to care, but I'd find that absurd, stupid actually.
As it happens, about 18,000 people will die today from air pollution, as shown in the famous Lancet publication about which anti-nukes couldn't give a shit, and about which no amount of money would make them give a shit.
And yet these same people want to tell me about "risk."
I repeat this text often to give a sense of the scale of the human cost of anti-nukism, whether proclaimed with head up the ass insisting that no one does anything except for money, or otherwise:
It is here: Global burden of 87 risk factors in 204 countries and territories, 19902019: a systematic analysis for the Global Burden of Disease Study 2019 (Lancet Volume 396, Issue 10258, 1723 October 2020, Pages 1223-1249). This study is a huge undertaking and the list of authors from around the world is rather long. These studies are always open sourced; and I invite people who want to carry on about Fukushima to open it and search the word "radiation." It appears once. Radon, a side product brought to the surface by fracking while we all wait for the grand so called "renewable energy" nirvana that did not come, is not here and won't come, appears however: Household radon, from the decay of natural uranium, which has been cycling through the environment ever since oxygen appeared in the Earth's atmosphere.
Here is what it says about air pollution deaths in the 2019 Global Burden of Disease Survey, if one is too busy to open it oneself because one is too busy carrying on about Fukushima:
Now, if someone thinks that taking an ethical position on this matter can only come from "feeding at the trough," I am spectacularly disinterested in their opinion of me, what they dislike about me, or any such bullshit. I am disinterested, and frankly disgusted by ethically withered people of this type.
I would be appalled, in fact, if I received any modicum of respect from such a person. I am, as always, happy to dismiss such people, because they deserve no more than that.
Have a wonderful weekend.

As for the terrorist threat, it has always been from the far right. Al Qaeda was more of a distraction than a main event, since they were much more efficient at killing fellow Muslims than anyone else.

If we dont take serious measures to address the medias enabling and even promoting, radical, right-wing extremists, armed to the teeth with weapons of war, we could easily see our entire democracy tumbling down. When people think, it cant happen here oftentimes, by then, it already has.
