The Norwegians killed her because human onlookers were getting too close. What a wretched species we are.
Freya the walrus sinks boats and captures hearts in Norway
For a week, a young female walrus nicknamed Freya has enchanted Norwegians by basking in the sun of the Oslo fjord, making a splash in the media and bending a few boats.
The 600kg (1,300lb) marine mammal has been named after the Norse goddess of love and beauty.
She has already been sighted in the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark and Sweden and has now chosen to spend part of the summer in Norway.
Freya first gained notoriety in Norway by climbing on to pleasure boats in Kragero, an idyllic southern coastal village, and has been doing the same in the waters of the capital since 17 July.

Freya the walrus euthanised after troubling crowds in Oslo fjord
A walrus nicknamed Freya that attracted crowds while basking in the sun in the Oslo fjord has been euthanised.
The decision to euthanise was taken on the basis of a global evaluation of the persistent threat to human security, the head of Norways fisheries directorate, Frank Bakke-Jensen, said in a statement.

Officials had previously said they were considering euthanasia because repeated appeals to the public to keep their distance from the young female weighing 600kg (1,300lb) had been in vain ... Despite repeated appeals, curious onlookers continued to approach her, sometimes with children in tow, to take photographs.

Walrus Freya who became attraction in Norway's Oslo Fjord put down
The operation to euthanise her had been carried out "in a humane fashion", with the body taken for further examination by vets.
Freya, who was first spotted in the Norwegian capital in mid-July, was named after the Norse goddess of beauty and love.
A protected species, walruses normally live further north in the Arctic.
They do not usually attack humans, but there have been some rare incidents.

This is horrible but not surprising. It really breaks my heart, though.

It's such a shame death was their only resort.

(16,168 posts)6. I can't wait til the walruses
begin euthanizing humans for their own safety. Humans seem to be the dumbest of the dumb plus they continually hurt themselves on purpose.

And if someone is stupid enough to get themselves hurt or killed harassing a walrus, so be it. This earth is not the exclusive domain of humans.
