'Catastrophic failure': California university accidentally kills 21,000 fish

A "catastrophic failure" killed 21,000 fish at a UC Davis research facility, the university announced Thursday.

In a statement titled "UC Davis Grieves the Loss of Fish," the university said the fish likely died of chlorine exposure at the UC Davis Center for Aquatic Biology and Aquaculture, which conducts research into species like green and white sturgeon and endangered Chinook salmon.

As a result of the mass die-off, the university is conducting an investigation into "where our process failed" and "initiating an independent external review." Some fish did survive the chlorine exposure, and researchers are working to rehabilitate them. The accident has impacted students, staff and faculty, who UC Davis says will be receiving assistance, where possible, with their impacted research programs. In addition, facilities that are similar to the fish enclosures will be assessed.

"We know that many researchers, regulatory agencies, Native American tribes and other partners trust us to care for their aquatic species," UC Davis said in a statement Thursday. "We will work hard to earn that trust by conducting a thorough review of our facilities, holding ourselves accountable for what happened, and taking steps to prevent it from happening ever again.

"We share the grief of the faculty, staff and students who worked to care for, study and conserve these animals. The people who conduct and support the research at this facility are conservationists, ecologists and veterinarians whose life work is devoted to understanding and supporting these species. We recognize that this loss is particularly devastating to our community."

4. UC Davis is a premier school ... I'd imagine it's a simple error someone made accidentally

Misplacing a decimal point somewhere when measuring chlorine, that kind of thing.

They kill millions of dolphins and sharks every year that nobody ever eats, let alone millions upon millions of fish that never make it to market, or go to waste at market.

Perspective, man.

that a trillion fish are killed annually. Only about 20% are actually consumed, the rest (called by-kill or bycatch) are wasted.

Including an ex-girlfriend. I've partied in Davis a bunch of times.

I thought the post I responded to was a bit harsh is all, it was clearly an accident and everyone is heartbroken there I'm sure.

that all their research has gone down the shitter. Weeks, months, years of it ruined, and millions of dollars pissed away over somebody's fuck-up. Back to Square One for a whole bunch of people, many of whom may not be able to acquire the enough funding to start over. I pity the poor grad students who toiled away for months on end, thinking their degree was in sight, only to discover that they'll have to start their research all over again.

Many strains in CA are down close to about few thousand or less. The Klamath and Sacramento rivers use to be the major watersheds. The San Joaquin River did have salmon runs, now long gone to irrigation uses (see Tulare Lake). Even the Los Angeles river had chinook salmon.
