August 16, 1977 - it happened 45 years ago

Most of us are old enough to remember this awful day - the sad death of Elvis Presley. He apparently died of a massive heart attack, having suffered from heart disease and other problems for many years. Heavy use of prescription drugs were also a factor.

The King of Rock N Roll is dead. Long live the King!

I read that very few men in his family lived past 60. I think his dad made it to 62.

I learned that from the Wikipedia article. I guess Elvis lost in the genepool lottery.

My family were all getting ready to go out for dinner for the evening. We had the news on, and the local WAVE-TV anchor (We were living in Kentucky at the time) came on and announced, almost as an afterthought that, oh by the way, Elvis Presley died today.

Strange. Even though I was eight, and thought forty-two was old, even I knew he was way too young to die.

Elvis only had 42 years, but he made 'em count.

7. I was a waitress working in a family-style chicken restaurant that night. I remember it clearly.

Somebody in the kitchen had a radio on when there was a news bulletin announcing his death. Half the waitresses burst into tears and so did many diners as the news spread.

It was shocking but I remember thinking there was something wrong with me because I wasn't more upset. I respected his contributions to music but it wasn't really my thing. It was, however, one of those landmark events you remember where you were, just like JFK and John Lennon.
