I did wonder what my exact "road to forbidden" was.

If I can reconstruct, I'll give directions, so to speak.

But we're not going to be allowing discussion of removed posts any time soon. We allowed it in the past and it was incredibly disruptive.

a LOT. But I have no idea what's causing it. I finally went in and cleared out cookies and cache. That's all I could think to do. So far, so good... but I've not been on very long since doing that. Then I saw this message and thought, aha! maybe someone will say why I'm seeing it.

So... why does it happen? Anyone know?

12. It's a firewall issue

Our service provider uses a sophisticated firewall in an effort to protect DU's servers from DOS attacks and other hazards. For reasons that are still unknown to us, sometimes the firewall "overreacts" and blocks access to the site for some legitimate traffic. When this happens, you get the "forbidden" error, or a "403" error. It means the firewall is blocking your attempt to access certain pages on the site.

The firewall adapts, so after a relatively short period of time -- usually no longer than an hour or two -- it recognizes that a connection attempt is legitimate and lets the traffic through. At that point, the error will go away.

If you're using a VPN, my advice would be to try turning it off when connecting to DU (VPNs often use IP addresses that raise flags with firewalls). You may also have success by connecting to upload.democraticunderground.com instead of www.democraticunderground.com. Otherwise, I'm afraid the only solution is to wait a bit for the error to clear itself.

It's annoying, but unfortunately we haven't yet been able to come up with a satisfactory solution. It's something we're still trying to fix. My apologies for the inconvenience.

at least I know it's not something I'm doing wrong on my end! next time up, I'll try the alternate url. A bit ago I was getting so frustrated I just shut it down and decided to go clean house. (Now THAT is Monday morning frustration! LOL) No worries... Like I said, I just wondered if it was a setting or something I was doing. I keep my system locked pretty tight. It's entirely possible your firewall doesn't like my firewall. I've used IoBit software for years and it's saved my butt many times. But like I said, I'm locked tight... might be too tight.

a part of the site that you should not have access to. It has nothing to do with your content, which would have to be examined by a human. Did it also have the number 403?
