Another Fox Lie - "Minneapolis teacher contract will lay off white teachers first....."

Faux News headline: Minneapolis teacher contract will lay off white teachers first regardless of seniority.

I just saw the Faux News headline flash across a website I was on, it seemed very off so I did a little digging. For starters I discovered that this contract was actually ratified back in June, so Faux News is digging up old tidbits to try and stir shit up.

The real facts are that Minneapolis recognizes that the population of teachers should more closely represent the demographics of their community at large, and that minority teachers are largely underrepresented. Basically all that the new contract is doing is giving minority teachers a one position seniority bump if there will be layoffs and minority teachers are underrepresented as compared to the community.

Except that it is almost for sure unconstitutional per USSC precedent going back to the 1990's kelly1mm Aug 2022 #3

If a minority teacher is pegged to be laid off, they’ll go to the next lowest seniority non-minority teacher and lay them off instead.

Minority teachers also have have priority in rehiring.

So non-minority teachers will be the first laid off and the last brought back. But if that’s what union members voted for, then none of my business.

I think the only possible out is that this a union contract that was presumably voted on by membership. Not sure how that would play out if a member who voted against it is laid off in favor of someone with less seniority.

How is it a lie? They will lay off white teachers who have more tenure than teachers of color, simply because of race.

This is surely unconstitutional and hopefully will get them sued.
