Putty-man McConnell gave an interview in which he stated it would be harder for Republicans to flip the Senate than the House, citing the following reason:
"Senate races are just different, they're statewide"
TRANSLATION: "You can't gerrymander the shit out of the districts in a state-wide election, the way you've done in House elections."
The only thing you can do is elect a--hole Secretaries of State who make sure the Democratic-leaning areas don't have enough voting machines; make sure voter lists are purged of names that sound like people who might vote Democratic; and when it comes down to it, simply discount or exclude votes from Democratic areas.
Yeah, you can do THAT, but you can't gerrymander the districts, so that a 40% minority of Republicans manages to get 60% of the House seats the way you usually do. Too bad, so sad, when you can't cheat in broad daylight.

(36,307 posts)This was facilitated by the the fact all the Senators from the South were Dems. States that had low populations compared to the industrial North.
There were 16 Rd in the Senate in 1936

We used to pretend they weren't all racist assholes, but they were. They've gone to the Dark Side and we're fine. It's important to educate the next generations and teach them Civics 101. It's import to keep electing GREAT Democratic Senators wherever we can, and support them in the best ways possible.

(24,470 posts)You know, the senate that needs 60 votes to do most things?
As a resident of LA Country, I feel very underrepresented in the Senate.

(36,307 posts)That's why elections for Senators are state wide. They used to be picked by the state legislature.

(25,366 posts)Yes, we have shitty R appointed ones, but guess what?
They get fired!
If they were elected R, they would be 1,000,000 times worse.
Even though they're not very good, they are appointed, so they don't "play to their base" and aren't "always running for election"...They're a bit more objective. And if they get in trouble, they quit.

(25,366 posts)If he had been elected, he would stayed and it would have gotten worse and worse. We can't do anything about elected officials in Texas, except to vote them out. Keep in mind, Texas elected Ted Cruz, Paxton, Abbott, Sid Miller et al.....
Most of the SOS's are more moderate compared to the rest of the cabal. They are more likely to respond public pressure. We've been through about 4 of them in the last five years.

Secretaries of state have historically flown under the radar in Pennsylvania, but if Mastriano be
came governor, the election denier would appoint someone to the role who could try to block the certification of votes.

(25,366 posts)In Texas, counties vary in who runs elections.
In my county, we have an appointed elections administrator and she's great and very professional. She must be non-partisan at all times. She does her job well.
In Harris County, (Houston) the elected clerk ran elections. The clerk was always republican until 2019. In 2018, Harris went blue and they elected a Democratic clerk and Democratic County Judge. (In Texas "County Judge" is the county mayor and the position is not judicial) In 2020, the County Commissioners appointed an Elections Administrator for the first time. There have been hiccups and the Republicans in Harris County have treated her like shit.
My county is bluer than Harris County. In Harris County Commissioners were 3/5 GOP until 2018 elections. In 2018, it went to 2/5.
In my county, it has been 1/5 GOP for the last 20 years, or 4/5 Dems...
