In 2015 and Republicans were going to have a brokered convention to pick another candidate but because Trump was so wildly popular with the 80% of their base who are authoritarians, the Republicans put party before country and picked Trump. When they did that they mortally wounded democracy in the US. Democracy requires at least two parties who are committed to the electoral process. Authoritarians don't want democracy if they don't win. The Bushes, Cheneys, Romney etc. wouldn't even support Trump after he was nominated. This unprecedented action was because they knew that they had an unprecedented candidate, and they knew his friends and supporters. The US now has only one viable party which is committed to democracy. Until the corporate Republicans take back control of their party or come up with a viable alternative which is committed to democracy, democracy in the US will be on life support at best.
