General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsDU ads are getting weird. I almost miss the toe fungus adverts.
I'm a star member so I only see them in the time that I log in. But in the last few days, they went from men's apparel to night vision goggles and just now, full face GAS masks. Not N95. Full face Gas masks.
If I didn't know better, I would say someone is fishing in DU's waters.

I think the last time something like this happened, someone said that it might just be the way the internet cable is set up, sharing data streams with my neighbors.

(36,309 posts)That's a DU classic.
I think is was actually an ad for some garden implement but the member thought it was a huge purple dildo.

(36,309 posts)When I'm at Yahoo mail, I get ads saying there are very hot mature women and grannies who want to meet me. I have no idea why I get those ads.

(25,537 posts)Latest is a weird thing called "Amazing Talker," with pictures of random women with prices. Have no idea what that is.

(46,735 posts)Because we know how specific ads are getting based on our searches, it makes no sense when something over the edge turns up.

(70,121 posts)they set some key words that they wont allow, and can tag a particular ad that doesnt belong here, and get it taken down. but other than that, nada.
Tetrachloride
(7,847 posts)they can host the ads themselves which is to say - be their own advertising company.
Spock said in The Original Series There are always alternatives.
mopinko
(70,121 posts)and you sign a contract w them.
and no, they cant be their own ad agency. there might be another company doing this placement, but launching an ad agency is a heavy lift.

(21,949 posts)Without ads, I couldn't afford to run DU. It's that simple.
Baitball Blogger
(46,735 posts)We understand. There's not much you can do about it.
I just remember when DU was attacked and put down in the 2016 election, so I know bad actors are always watching. If they can find a way to make trouble for us, they will.
I brought this up to bring everyone's attention to it, so they don't follow a link and end up a target for telemarketing.
EarlG
(21,949 posts)I'm sorry the ads aren't always perfectly targeted. Unfortunately I don't think it's an exact science.
I just need to know if something goes wrong and they end up overlaying DU content (because that shouldn't happen of course). To be fair to my ad provider, they are very responsive to any issues that I bring to them, and do their best to fix problems that come up.

(2,203 posts)at least last week. My membership had run out a while ago, so have been getting ads for a while, but recently there is an ad overlay that pops up and covers the middle of the thread listing screen. I paid in again, so all the ads (including that overlay thing) are now gone (YAY!) so do not know if that is still happening, but thought you would like to know.

(21,949 posts)I was made aware of this yesterday and reported it to our ad provider this morning.

(5,177 posts)I get a lot of ads for grow lights. Once I clicked on an ad that I thought was for shop lights, but it was a grow light.
I try to click on all the Victoria's Secret ads I can, then I get nice young women modeling underwear.

And because poor internet, it also means the page took a half minute to finish loading. Yay.
Oh well. Back on goes the ol internet speed booster.

(5,351 posts)...and I don't have any interest in either. At least they're not as bad as Facebook, which dropped an ad for the latest and greatest autopsy saw(!) into my feed not long ago.
