They may never be capable.
A good percentage of this country has been sucked into a cult for the last several years and they cannot see their Leader being charged with a crime. They will have a difficult time accepting any evidence that is shown. They will scream, roll around on the floor with their feet kicking the air, and threaten violence if something happens to their Leader. They have adopted the personality of their Cult Leader.
Can justice be done in such an environment? For the good of America and the rest of the nation, it must be done.
We don't yet know all the facts of the case. Donald Trump has not yet been charged or indicted. But the evidence against him does not look good.
He appears to be facing election fraud, conspiracy against the United States, obstruction of justice, and quite possibly, espionage charges. We do not yet know the extent of the latter.
But the truth will not be easy for his supporters to handle. They have way too much invested in their Cult Leader.
However, justice must be done. It cannot be put on a shelf. The question is how do they work around a blind, obedient, but violent cult, as they uncover the facts and the evidence?

(47,131 posts)Yes some are in denial.
But we have to face the reality that some Americans are fine with overthrowing the government, selling secrets to Russia, Putin installing a POTUS. A criminal enterprise taking a wrecking ball to our country.
Because they want a white, male christian minority and will do anything to get it. Others are violent, angry extremists who just want to burn everything down because they can.

(21,360 posts)the majority of Magats weren't fooled into worshipping a cult leader, they have been waiting for him to emerge. These Magats look upon Trump as being sent by God to rid the world of evil Democrats.
I live among them, I know them. I golf with an 89 year old Korean War vet, helped out at the church, did Meals on Wheels, did military funerals. He is a misogynist, racist, bigot. I thought I had him cornered so I asked him if he was voting for the Muslim or the Harley rider. (He used to ride a Harley) He said, I can't vote for Fetterman, he's a Democrat.

(46,122 posts)When I was visiting Germany 1979 to 1989, the majority of Germans (young and old) had moved on from Hitler. That was then; this is now.
That being said, there were a few loyalists malingering. Some were senior citizens who longed for the "Good Old Days" and there were German RW-ers. The latter were found in clusters of Jaegers (Royal Huntsmen) who gathered in the woods, blew their horns, drank beer, and lustily sang Hitler Fight Songs. Some had memorabilia hidden in the cellars of their homes.
My guess is that there will be a similar pattern in the future for the US. Some will be Civil War Re-enactment enthusiasts. Some will be MAGAts, period. But there will be some clusters years from now. They won't wake up and go away.

(21,360 posts)they were raised that way.
Some of the younger ones change because of going to school where they meet non-white kids who aren't so bad. This is why the Magats are working to control what is taught in schools and this isn't something new. The Koch brothers long ago gave money to Universities so long as they had a say in who the University hired.
Misogyny, racism, bigotry and all the rest is taught by parents to their kids from generation to generation, once the Magats get control of education, they will learn the same thing in schools.

We bombed Germany into rubbles and sacrificed the lives of thousands and thousands of our brave young men in he process.
No one is hopping in boats to come over here and rid the US of these lunatics.
Sorry to say, but we are more Germany early 30s than anything else, we are still VERY much in the early stages.
Once they (and it is really likely they will in fact be able and do so) finish breaking our democracy and instilling their (in their diseased minds) chrisofascist idiocracy utopia, how does it end?

(2,256 posts)I came up as a kid during that time...let's say the 1950s. The KKK was alive and well, public water fountains and restrooms were labeled 'colored' and 'white' and the 'colored' rode in the back of the bus. But more relevant to the discussion, the population was 90% white. Today it's closer t0 60%. That's what bugs the cult bunch.

The roots are much, M U C H deeper than him, he just was willing and able to go to places the "traditional" GOPers were not prepared to go, but the "base" was drooling to be taken to.
Take him out and the base will demand more of the same - see the completely off the hook senate and governor candidates they have nominated for this election.
The fact is, my entire adult life (40+ years now) this country has NEVER been able to handle the truth with Rs - they let Reagen off the hook for Iran Contra and bought all of his flowery bullshit while he started the march toward decontructing our America democracy in full.
They sat back and let Rs spend the 90s tirelessly attack Bill Clinton for no good reason.
They let them claim the idiot to was asleep at the wheel on 9-11 "is keeping us safe" while lying us into Iraq, which he was never held accountable for because "the country could not handle it."
They rewarded Rs the biggest mid term win in our lives running against THEIR form of health care reform.
That said ... Yeah, it won't likely help much, but if possible definitely strive to hold 45 and others to account.
Perfect summary of how we got here.
It all became clear to anyone watching back in the 1980's where they were heading. So Trump was no surprise to me, at all.
You say it won't likely help much, but strive to hold 45 and others to account; there is a possibility that this may actually HURT us in the long run. If Trump goes to jail, he will forever be held up as the glorious martyr of the New American Fascist movement.

45 is older, though, and already pretty haggard and unhealthy looking.
But, again ... There are COUNTLESS people tripping overthemselves to be the next 45, and they always rally around whoever they put out front cause, LIBERALS!

(768 posts)I don't disagree with this. I would love to see Trump and his cronies go to jail.
But there is a reality associated with this that many Progressives don't want to acknowledge. There will be a heavy price to pay for making Trump a martyr.
I'm not afraid of this, I have had a long life and if shit hits the fan, so be it. But I think about my kids and grand-kids.
It's all well and good to talk about getting justice for Trump. But what happens if we win this battle and lose the war? Jailing Trump will give an enormous surge of energy to the Fascist Right.
kentuck
(111,103 posts)I think that is the biggest danger.

(768 posts)But either way, losing the war is what we all have to fear.
If I understand your point, there is a greater chance of losing our democracy if we don't convict Trump. Maybe that's true. I honestly can't predict with any certainty, because we are in brand new territory here.
But the longer we keep Trump in the spotlight and allow him to preen and strut, the more radical his hard core base becomes. They are already trotting out the domestic terrorists and militias in order to foment their "civil war". It is coming.
Never dreamed that would be in this situation in my lifetime. After Obama was elected, I felt that surely we would move ahead with an upward trajectory. But I didn't count on the power of populist propaganda and the emergence of someone like Trump.

(54,027 posts)The problem is the reactionaries who are holding this country back. The majority of Americans believe in progress, equality, tackling climate change, fair taxation rates, a robust public sector including responsible healthcare policies, individual liberty, prosecuting anti-democratic Republican stooges, and common sense gun laws. The American public is with the center-left on policy issues. It's time we started seeing things that way and quit surrendering the public face of this country to the people who wrap themselves in the flag while they reject its core principles.
kentuck
(111,103 posts)Everybody does not think the same. We cannot force our opinions on others. We are defined by what we are, not by what we wish we were. We are a divided nation at this time.

(54,027 posts)But I'm tired of fellow liberals handing over the keys to the Republicans just cause they wrap themselves in the flag. Opening up opportunity to everyone, welcoming immigrants and ensuring they get a fair shake at the American Dream, ending racial segregation, regulating the robber barons... these are equally part of the American story. And I think ending segregation is more important than starting it up in the first place.

(111,103 posts)However, when his defiance moves over into treason against our country, he has lost his right to speak for anyone. When he becomes a threat to our nation, he can no longer be permitted the legitimacy they give him. He has forfeited his right to claim the privileges that America has afforded him. If it is discovered that he gave secrets to our enemies and adversaries, there is no defense for him, no matter how much they might worship him.

So they either cant live in reality or dont mind his crimes, then they have the nerve to call themselves patriots. They will die for someone who couldnt care less about them and wouldnt mind even hurting them.
All of this for what? For what?
