Have you noticed that separation of races is getting worse?

I sure feel it here. People are nervous and no one wants trouble. Everyone is being polite but it is just covering up a lot of fear. People are being careful. And for God's sake don't do anything to bring in the cops.

In much of suburban America, the schools have become segregated again.

It's a complex issue that creates a lot of problems.

“ Everyone is being polite but it is just covering up a lot of fear.”

The point of behavioral conventions is to provide a way of behaving that is agreed upon as inoffensive, so that people aren’t beating one another up all of the time.

Recognizing humanity’s capacity for violence and cruelty, “politeness” provides a prescribed way to act in order to avoid deterioration of everyday social interactions into blood feuds.

I'm a white teacher in a racially diversified middle school. When I attempt discipline (e.g., something as menial as keeping the kids in the classroom), I get responses that of outrage, calling me racist.

While I easily recognize that's begging the question, it also pushes me off my mark because now I have to double-down to enforce the rules of the school and it looks like I'm avoiding their issue of race. They know it and I know it.

I teach in a very diverse HS and you just have to be true to who you are and sensitive to racial identity and differences but not let kids manipulate you. If they see that the faux outrage works then they will use it. For me the solution is don't be a hardass but if its nonsense let it roll off. I do not feel any increase here in racial divisions that the op refers to. If anything the kids accept each other and appreciate each others differences better than ever in my little corner of the world.

I'm a substitute, without the shield and protection of a teachers' union.

I've been falsely reported in the past and have lost districts.

These kids are smart enough to know how to get you fired.

If you are being "reported" for things you didn't do and the admin is buying BS from kids without evidence then the problem is the administrators not the kids. They will regret that when they can't find subs to fill their needs. They are in short supply almost everywhere these days.

1. Kid makes an accusation.
2. Administration investigates.
3. Administration consults insurance carrier.
4. Insurance carrier advises to release substitute from duties.
5. Irrelevant whether kid was truthful.

Schools are scared to death of lawsuits, usually because it costs money to settle cases before the public hears about them.

She’s white.

She’s mentioned a few times to me that she doesn’t like the fact that it’s a white person telling a young black child to sit down and conform to the rules of the classroom. Even from a young age, a white person is telling a black person what to do and she wonders what that subconsciously teaches children about their place in society.

As a middle aged white guy, I wonder about it too.

I'm supposed to be helping kids acclimate the world outside the school. There are rules everyone needs to try to follow and race is irrelevant but they make race a reason to do whatever they want.

Being aware of the issue and discussing it front-and-center in our communities could help to disarm it.

Other than that and directly pushing initiatives that help to blend communities more, I’m not sure there is much we can do.

I for one think that changing the funding model for our schools would have a huge impact on blending communities. Many people, when they’re moving to a neighborhood, make the decision based on the quality of schools. If schools in poorer neighborhoods (i.e “brown people” neighborhoods) were just as good as in the more affluent neighborhoods (white people neighborhoods), it would be one less reason for “white flight”. Not at all to mention the downstream impacts of improving education for the poorest Americans would have on our society as a whole.

The world would be a much better place I’d everyone in the world thought the same way I do…

sad...in 2016 after watching an ex-potus run a campaign where I had thought Americans had turned a corner on racial matters the republikkkan candidate blew that all to hell. While at that time true Americans still had a lot of work to do in racial and human rights areas I felt we had finally understood and accepted our diversity.

President Obama allowed me to think this way. He was a fair and competent POTUS. And then in 2016, the hidden nazis walked through the societal door. NOW they are in GOVERNMENT, WHITE supremacists. Still a minority but making a lot of noise. And with the 1/6 Committee so are we thank god. And after 1/6, god only knows how deep this conspiracy was accepted as THE correct thing to do. Lots of fear and open arrogance from those who back trump. I live in a pretty diverse area. Lots of sane people. But those who love a narcissistic madman are here also. It's a storm we are in. Gale force winds for sure. Every chance in public I damn trump and his followers. And will vote my conscience. The cops will be called only if I, as a disabled vet, must. Bless President Biden and vice-President Kamala Harris

Hope this opinion makes sense. Stay safe.

However, I’ve only ever seemed to live in predominantly “white” communities. I live in a semi-affluent community outside of Toledo, Ohio. If I don’t leave my community, I can go days without seeing a minority of any sort.

After living in a place like this, I can totally see where the Republican Party gets its support. These people are completely oblivious to the leg-up they’ve had in life when compared to the majority of people in our country.

I live in a place where 40% of the school age children don't speak English at home and the majority of people are not white.

People who are uncomfortable with that sort of diversity simply don't live here.

Our police department is a bit jaded and perpetually understaffed. They don't tend to show up when called unless someone is bleeding or on fire.

I'm always fascinated to hear stories from other parts of the U.S.A. where it seems the police have nothing better to do than hang out at WalMart as a deterrence to teenage shoplifters.

I grew up in a place that was 99% white and affluent. I think the police spent most of their time covering up domestic violence incidents. When they weren't doing that they were out harassing people who were not white.

Have you considered the police might be part of the problem?

The other ones were Doctor. Veterinarian . Teacher. Journalist. That's all I can remember.

amount of damage. Horrible things have happened to elderly Asians that were just walking home from the store. And then you find out the perp was Hispanic or black.

These tensions are not just black on white or vice versa. This violence has spread like wildfire. Now the inner city gangs have gotten so blatant about their violence that they seek revenge by shooting up whole birthday parties or backyard barbecues

It hardly makes the news. .
